Thanks to a small volunteer group today, we 10 removed 6.5kg rubbish from Mills Beach in glorious conditions. Welcome to new members Marley and Eleanor and Alisdair and Cheryl and it was nice to see Jill and Pauline again. Extra appreciation to Alisdair, Cheryl, Marley and Eleanor who helped sort, and to Ray and Alison who assisted with the Litter Stopper count. Cigarette butts topped the tally again = 400, and then hard plastic < 5cm = 306, and sadly 66 nurdles, the building blocks of plastic. U Name it was a beach umbrella pole and 2 plastic tree guards, the latter which will be taken to Naturelinks in Fuji St. Vincent signed up as well, so hopefully we'll see him at Mother's Beach on Dec 6 at 9.15 for a 9.30 start, with the rest of the team. Hi Everyone,

Next clean is this Sunday at Mills Beach, and after the rain and what with it being Cup week, almost, we need as many hands on deck as possible.

For new vollies, we have all the gear, but please dress suitably, the weather has turned cool so a hooded top layer is advisable.

When you've been to 3 cleans, you receive a yellow Beach Patrol t shirt. I will be taking orders for children's BP shirts this Sunday as we have to have minimum numbers for a run.

As it is hooded plover season, please keep off the vegetation and if you see someone on it, please ask them politely to step off and why, and secondly the longer the vegetation is there, the more protection it offers our beaches. This is more for ocean beach goers but good to know anyhow.

Please wear your yellow shirts so we can be seen. Still most people I talk to who live in Mornington don't know what Beach Patrol is.

Over 18,000 loose plastic bottle caps were picked up by our volunteers in the past 12 months. 🛑🤯

Because loose caps are small and buoyant, they easily wash down storm drains and out to sea, threatening marine wildlife. Plus, their small size means standard recycling machinery can’t sort them, often sending them straight to landfill. ❌🌊

But there is a simple fix: Tethering them to the bottle. 🔗

Keeping the cap attached to the bottle forces them to stay together through the sorting process, turning thousands of pieces of loose beach litter into cleanly recyclable plastic. Europe already mandated tethered caps back in 2024 to stop this exact crisis.

It’s time for Victoria to lead by example and stop plastic pollution at the source. Please help us get this over the line! 🐋🌱

Great conditions for a great clean and not as dirty as expected. Touch wood. Probably due to the hand cleaning that goes on instead of the rake, which makes our job harder.
Not happy about finding festive ribbon 2m tho and 2 hard fishing lures and line and least of all happy about a group having a photo shoot with bright red balloons right on the sand, some which they lost in the water, but luckily managed to retrieve them. Oh well it was for charity so they're redeemed!

Ban balloons, ban polystyrene, ban cigarette butts just to name a few.

None of these could be picked up with a mechanical beach rake anyhow.

Things are about to change in a good big way, so stay tuned. They are starting to happen in other shires which are open to positive change. The only way for things to change is when enough individuals advocate loudly enough.

You made a real difference and save innumerable marine species. Next clean is Mills beach 1 November. Time: 9.15 for 9.30 start. Will be busy as it's Cup week.
