Our commentary on the new stairs at Shire Hall Beach. A poignant photo showing the significant amount of rock along the shoreline, stark evidence of all the sand we’ve lost since 2013.

We are pleased to see some work being done down at Shire Hall Beach over the last couple of days with the installation of some new stairs.

It’s disappointing that the stairs are needed because the ramp that used to be in their place ended up so far out of the sand that it became a hazard and had to be removed. The old ramp allowed access for people with disabilities and prams to the beach.

The loss of sand at Shire Hall Beach continues unabated. Signifiant erosion of the sand dunes is now occurring. We would love to see the root cause of the erosion problem being properly investigated.

Caught up with Deputy Mayor Cr Paul Pingiaro as we head into our first briefing for 2026, and took the chance to check out the latest coastal infrastructure works.

I challenge anyone to point to a time when more was happening along our coastline – less talk, more action.

Thanks to the team for braving the early heat to get on with the job 👏

Devastated to hear about the damage done at Shire Hall Beach today with the loss of beach boxes.

This beach has had a rough time since the completion of the wave wall at the pier without the addition of the protective reef.

Beach Boxes are on Crown Land leases with management of these areas being given to (in most cases where there is no one else) the shire.

Our coasts are fragile. With every change made to them affecting another area.

Then add these incredibly powerful storms and the damage is extensive.

We need the state to do the work on this public asset so as to ensure the longevity of the beach and the area right through to Mother’s Beach.

We must fight for funding for our coasts for mitigation and adaptation before we lose it all. We don’t have long to act.

It is so disappointing to see the severe damage to the beach knowing that the beach has been made increasingly vulnerable over the last decade because of the installation of the wavescreen on Mornington Pier.
