πŸ‘‘ Where Do Queen Bees Come From?

🐝 Every queen starts life as an ordinary fertilised egg.

🍽️ The difference is what she's fed.

πŸ‘©β€πŸ³ Nurse bees select a very young larva and flood it with special brood food.

🏰 Workers build a large peanut-shaped queen cell around her.

πŸ›οΈ Around Day 8-9 the cell is capped.

πŸ‘‘ Day 16 she emerges as a virgin queen.

βš”οΈ She may destroy rival queens and queen cells.

✈️ Weather permitting, she takes several mating flights.

πŸ₯š A few days later she begins laying eggs and becomes the colony's new queen.

Bee Club Quick Tip

If you make a split and introduce a queen cell:

πŸ“… Don't panic if you don't see eggs for a few weeks.

The queen still needs to:

emerge

mature

mate

return safely

start laying

Patience saves many unnecessary hive inspections!

🐝 "The hardest part of raising queens isn't the bees... it's stopping beekeepers from checking them every second day."
