💈✂️ FROM A GOAL TO AN APPRENTICESHIP!

A huge congratulations to Eligh, who has turned his interest in barbering into an exciting career opportunity! 🙌

Since joining Connect’s Work It Out program in May, Eligh has been working towards his goals, enrolling in Certificate II Skills for Work at TAFE and exploring his passion for barbering.
As his confidence grew, Eligh took matters into his own hands, approaching a local barbershop to express his interest in working there. His persistence paid off, and he was offered a barbering apprenticeship! 🎉

Eligh is now working at the barbershop while continuing his TAFE studies, and with support from his Work It Out Caseworker, he's even got his first pair of professional clippers!

In Eligh's own words:

Student Experience | Work Placement at Connect Northern Rivers 💙

"My name is Michaela and I'm in Year 10 at Tweed River High School.

The best thing about my placement was how inviting and nice the staff were and how lovely the work environment is. I found nothing negative about my placement at Connect. It was a great experience overall!

While I was at work placement I improved many of my skills, including communication, teamwork and technical skills. One thing I wasn't expecting to do was go on site visits and help drop off paperwork. Going on a site visit helped me learn a little more about the process of signing up host employers.

My placement also helped me understand how an office job actually works and runs. I really enjoyed my placement because I was never bored and always had a task to complete, with no rush. Thank you for having me!"

STEP UP has kicked off in Casino!
This week we welcomed our first group of young people to Step Up, a new 8-week program all about building confidence, trying new things, making connections and taking positive steps towards the future.

Over the next eight weeks, the group will get involved in everything from podcasting, film and photography, art and sport, through to practical support with job readiness, resumes, ID, licences and TFNs.

There’ll also be plenty of opportunities to explore strengths, future pathways, money skills and what comes next – all in a relaxed and supportive environment.
A great first session to get things underway, with plenty more to come! 🙌

And this is only the beginning! Stay tuned as we follow their Step Up journey over the next eight weeks. 🌱💪

Today we celebrated the official launch of Mob Mic’d Up at The Space, bringing together guests to hear more about the program, the young people involved and what’s behind the podcast.

It was great to share what Mob Mic’d Up is all about and give everyone a taste of what’s to come.

🌟 Work Placement Shout Out!
A big shout out to Matilda from Ballina Coast High School, who recently completed her Business Services work placement at her school and has shared a little about her experience with us! 👏

Work Placement is a great opportunity for students to step into a real workplace, build confidence and put the skills they’re learning at school into practice.

We’d also like to recognise BCHS and Head Teacher Administration, Donna Ryan, for their ongoing support of work placement and for encouraging students to make the most of these valuable opportunities.

It takes a team effort between students, schools and host employers to make work placement happen – and these experiences can make a real difference in preparing young people for what comes next.

A big congratulations to 10 young people from our Work It Out program who completed their White Card training with ACE Community Colleges in Casino yesterday! 🙌

A great step towards building practical skills, getting work-ready and opening up future employment opportunities.

We were pleased to welcome the Hon. Kevin Hogan MP, Federal Member for Page, to .nr Nextship this week.

Kevin visited to learn more about the social enterprises operating across the Northern Rivers and the meaningful value they create for our community. Alongside visiting Nextship, we were also able to share the work happening through and discuss the upcoming podcast launch of the Mob Mic’d Up on 7th September at 10am.

At Nextship, we are proud to combine quality fulfilment and logistics services with real employment, training and pathway opportunities for local people. The Space Project and Mob Mic’d Up are further examples of the creative, community-led work taking place across our region.

Thank you, Kevin, for taking the time to see our work firsthand and recognise the important role social enterprises and community projects play in building a stronger Northern Rivers community.
