Rest, Reconnect, Remember, Respond: An Evening of Deep Ecology

Ever feel the weight of the world's environmental crises and wonder, “Where might I even begin?”

The answer isn't just in changing our habits: It’s in changing how we feel our connection to the Earth.

Join us for a powerful, experiential evening with Permaculture Sydney North as we dive into the transformative world of Deep Ecology.

We are thrilled to feature Erika Aligno, Director of the Institute for Deep Ecology and John Seed, founder and director of the Rainforest Information Centre in Australia and a prominent figure in the deep ecology movement! 🌟

Since 2023, Erika and John have worked closely together and co-led over a dozen transformative workshops across Australia and soon, the USA.

Erika invites us to explore how we can begin to strip away the illusion of separation and (re)connect with our true ecological identity.

• Poetry with John joining us via Zoom
• The roots of deep ecology
• A live, interactive practice in deeply connecting

🍂 Winter Permabee in Lane Cove! 🍂

Looking for a meaningful way to spend your Sunday?

Join Permaculture North for a lovely day of People Care as we give back to two long-standing members who have contributed so much to our community over the years. Now it’s our turn to return the favor and spruce up their front garden!

Whether you can drop by for a few hours or stay for the whole day, we’d love to have you.

🛠️ The To-Do List:

Removing apple mint
• Whipper-snipping between raised beds
• Repurposing a frog pond into a mini nursery/raised bed
• Raking up winter leaves & building a compost heap
• Weeding & potting up plants to take home!

💡 'Show & Tell' Activities to learn about:

• Growing lemon aspen into a hedge
• Growing a semi-deciduous native peanut tree
• Pumping bath water into the garden (greywater setup)

🥪 Food & Community

As always, there will be plenty of time to chat with like-minded people. To keep things easy for our hosts, lunch will be a simple affair.

🥣 Bonus: We are bringing a big pot of soup! If you feel like bringing a small dish to share, it would be wonderful (but entirely optional).

We had another fantastic soap and shampoo making PSN workshop, hosted by the wonderful Pat Hicks at her lovely home!

Pat provided so much great information and brilliant demonstrations. To top it all off, we enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea together and got to go home with generous gifts, including two blocks of soap and shampoo! 🫧✨

🌱 Permaculture at the Pub: Sydney North Edition!

Ready to talk soil, seeds, and sustainability over a cold one? 🍻

Our first Permaculture at the Pub kicks off this Monday, 4th May, and we’ll be gathering on the first Monday of every single month.
Come for a relaxed drink or meal with permies and like-minded folk to:

Have a yarn about all things green and sustainable.
Exchange news from our local community.
Connect with great people in a comfortable social setting.
Whether you can only stay for an hour or want to hang out for the whole night, we’d love to see you there.

Small‑Space & Container Gardening for Renters

We’re excited to welcome Sahar El‑Chiekh, whose rental garden was featured on Gardening Australia in April 2023.

Sahar is a self‑taught Sydney gardener who turned her western Sydney rental into a thriving food garden using containers, portable systems and clever small‑space ideas. She’s passionate about helping everyone grow food, no matter their space.

🕠 Doors open 6.30pm — come early to help set up, browse the library or check out the Reuse & Recycle table.
☕ Stay after the talk for a cuppa and chat. Supper by the Ku‑ring‑gai group.
💚 Free for members and guests — please register so we know numbers.

A great night for renters, beginners and anyone curious about growing more in small spaces.

Permaculture Sydney North Permabee

The Autumn permabee at Kusum’s in Ryde transformed a cluttered, vine‑choked front garden on a busy corner into a space she can now use to progress her bana grass barrier and future planting. The team cleared debris, relocated wormeries, tackled the rampant madeira vine, and celebrated their hard work with good food and great company on a perfect day.

Seaweed collection in March

Seaweed adventure success: despite wild waves and closed beaches, our resourceful crew still foraged golden kelp, sparked curiosity from onlookers, and wrapped up the day with a relaxing afternoon tea together.

🍄 Visit a Working Mushroom Farm in Woy Woy! Tuesday 14 April 10:00am

Join the Ku-ring-gai group for a fascinating behind‑the‑scenes tour of Margins Mushrooms — a family‑run farm growing organic White, Swiss Brown and Oyster mushrooms in Woy Woy.

The tour runs for 1.5 hours and includes a free bag of fresh mushrooms worth $15 and entry is just $20!

After the tour, we’ll enjoy a relaxed picnic lunch nearby
