🌱 Permaculture Problem-Solving in Action! 🌱
Shoutout to one of our amazing Permaculture Sydney North members, Steph, for tackling a long-term backyard challenge with a brilliant, sustainable solution! 🏡✨
For years, a steep slope at the end of her yard leading into a stormwater easement had been a major headache. After multiple attempts at terracing and planting failed, she took inspiration from a fantastic method demonstrated by Hannah on Gardening Australia—and the progress is looking great!
Instead of fighting the landscape, she has tackled a steep sloped area into a growing space by adding:
The Foundation: Heat-treated timber pallets were laid flat and securely pinned to the slope with timber stakes to stop them from slipping.
The Soil Build: Soil was layered over the pallets to prepare for planting.
The Living System: As the timber naturally rots down into the soil, it will provide crucial stability. Meanwhile, the upcoming plants will grow deep roots to permanently hold the bank in place!
Once established, this once-problematic slope will transform into a year-round haven providing flowers, food, and protection for our local bees, birds, and insects. 🐝🐦
What’s next for this work in progress?
More soil is on the way, followed by seedless mulch. To protect the hard work from our local bush turkeys scratching it all away, it will be covered with jute netting before a diverse mix of all-season native plants are tucked safely through the mesh. 🌿🛠️
