🌱 Seed Savers Gathering!

📅 When: Sunday, 25th October | 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

📍 Where: Longueville (accessible via buses like the 261 from St Leonards, stopping within 200m)

Join us for a hands-on afternoon of sorting, planting, and sharing! We’re revamping our community seed collection—now under the loving care of Mandy while Pete recovers from an injury (wishing you a speedy recovery, Pete! 💚).

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or completely new to saving seeds, everyone is welcome—no experience required! We’ll have seeds to plant, rooted cuttings to share, and fresh garden cuttings to take home.

What to bring (if you have them):

🏷️ Named and dated spare seeds for the collection
🌿 Seeds that need processing (we'll supply small envelopes!)
🪴 Small pots or seed trays to plant up and take home
🪵 Seed raising mix (some will also be provided)

Come share ideas over a cuppa while we plant! Mandy will also be sharing her tips on composting, worm farming, and making w**d tea fertilizer.

☕ Afternoon Tea: Tea, coffee, and scones provided! Feel free to bring a plate to share if you like.

Small Steps: Biodiversity Panel Discussion & Workshop

This event is part of the Citizen COP organised by People For Nature which I'm Permaculture folk will enjoy.

The event will be a mix of collective workshop and panel discussion and will be a beautiful opportunity to learn and connect with the local community.

Explore how small actions and collective voices can help protect biodiversity and restore habitats.

What a great and fun day at our complete propagator workshop! We made our own seed raising mix and selected seeds appropriate for each person’s microclimate and potted them up. We also looked at sun requirements and different plants, propagation by cuttings, tip layering, and divisions. If you missed out on this one, stay tuned for similar workshops in the future at Permaculture Sydney North.

🌱 Permaculture Problem-Solving in Action! 🌱

Shoutout to one of our amazing Permaculture Sydney North members, Steph, for tackling a long-term backyard challenge with a brilliant, sustainable solution! 🏡✨

For years, a steep slope at the end of her yard leading into a stormwater easement had been a major headache. After multiple attempts at terracing and planting failed, she took inspiration from a fantastic method demonstrated by Hannah on Gardening Australia—and the progress is looking great!

Instead of fighting the landscape, she has tackled a steep sloped area into a growing space by adding:

The Foundation: Heat-treated timber pallets were laid flat and securely pinned to the slope with timber stakes to stop them from slipping.

The Soil Build: Soil was layered over the pallets to prepare for planting.

The Living System: As the timber naturally rots down into the soil, it will provide crucial stability. Meanwhile, the upcoming plants will grow deep roots to permanently hold the bank in place!

Once established, this once-problematic slope will transform into a year-round haven providing flowers, food, and protection for our local bees, birds, and insects. 🐝🐦

What’s next for this work in progress?

More soil is on the way, followed by seedless mulch. To protect the hard work from our local bush turkeys scratching it all away, it will be covered with jute netting before a diverse mix of all-season native plants are tucked safely through the mesh. 🌿🛠️

Permies at the Pub�
6–9pm Monday 6th July, The Courtyard, Hornsby RSL

Come to our newest event and it happens on the first Monday of every month!

There's no agenda, no plan, no speakers – just a meeting of permies and like-minded folk to sit down, have a drink and a yarn, exchange news and possibly excess crops from our gardens, and generally connect with one another in a comfortable social setting, over some food and drink.

This month we're at Hornsby RSL. We'll be in the restaurant & bar area area known as The Courtyard.

Join us for a drink and/or dinner and a chat anytime from 6pm.

Despite the weather, we had a great weekend learning about the foundations of permaculture by exploring permaculture ethics and principles, designing from the keyline scale of permanence, climate patterns and zones as well as creating a no-dig garden bed and exploring the science of soil.

Lots of group work, brainstorms, and laughter were had and everyone got to go home with a plant or two.
