Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are hospitalised for asthma at nearly twice the rate of Non-Indigenous Australians.

The National Asthma Management Program connects people with the information and support they need to better manage asthma and stay well and for First Nations communities in the Northern Territory, it’s home to the only culturally tailored asthma support available. For many people, it is their only support.

The National Asthma Management Program isn’t just a nice to have, it’s a lifeline.

When Pam caught RSV, she thought it would be like any other virus. Instead, it became so serious that she ended up in hospital for an asthma flare-up.

For people with asthma, respiratory viruses like RSV can trigger flare-ups and symptoms that continue long after the initial infection has passed.

Read Pam's story here: https://buff.ly/QtMMxMQ

After a severe RSV infection worsened her asthma, Pam learned to advocate for her health and find the support she needed to manage her symptoms.

The National Asthma Management Program helps Australians access trusted asthma education, resources and support.

Without ongoing funding, these services are at risk.

If you've benefited from asthma education, information or support, now is the time to speak up.

Contact your MP and ask them to support continued funding for the National Asthma Management Program. Because we simply cannot afford to lose this vital service that so many people living with asthma rely on.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that can lead to severe illness in older adults. It can also worsen existing respiratory conditions like asthma.

The RSV vaccination is now available at no cost for:

➡️People aged 75 years and over
➡️Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 years and over

People aged 60-74, and people aged 50-59 with medical conditions increasing their risk of serious illness due to RSV (including severe asthma), may also get RSV vaccination via private purchase.

Vaccination is one way to reduce the risk of serious respiratory illness and complications this winter. Make sure you also practice good hygiene (like handwashing) and have regular asthma reviews.

If you or someone you care for lives with asthma, it’s especially important to be aware of respiratory infections like RSV and how to help protect against them.

✔️Check if you’re up to date with recommended vaccinations
✔️Speak with your doctor or pharmacist about what’s right for you

4 in 10 children with asthma miss school because of flare-ups or asthma attacks.

That's thousands of missed learning opportunities, missed playtime, and missed moments that our kids can't get back.

The National Asthma Management Program helps schools and families better manage asthma and reduce the impact it has on children's lives.

And its funding is now at risk.

On 1 December 2026, this support could disappear unless ongoing funding is secured.

Children deserve better than preventable asthma attacks.

This week is RSV Awareness Week.

RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is a common respiratory virus that can affect people of all ages. Many people only experience cold-like symptoms. But RSV can be serious, especially for babies, young children, older adults and people with health conditions.

As winter respiratory viruses begin to circulate more, it's important to know the risks. Make sure you recognise when symptoms become serious and understand how to protect yourself.

There are now vaccination options to help reduce the risk of severe RSV illness. If you have questions about RSV protection, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

Too many Australians are ending up in hospital because of asthma - even though up to 90% of asthma hospitalisations are preventable.

That’s why we can’t afford to lose the National Asthma Management Program.

This program helps keep people out of hospital. It helps children stay safe at school. It helps people get the support they need before asthma becomes an emergency.

And it’s available for free from anywhere around Australia.

But without urgent Federal Government funding, Australia’s only national, ongoing asthma management program will end on 1 December 2026.

Losing it would put people living with asthma at risk.

We all know air pollution is not great for us – but it can have some serious effects on more than just your lungs. PM2.5 comes from bushfires, car exhaust, and even wood heaters. Not great for anyone, especially if you have asthma. Learn more about PM2.5: https://buff.ly/ggLnzjs
