Cancer care does not end when treatment finishes.

Survivorship care focuses on a person’s health and wellbeing during and after cancer treatment. This can include managing long-term side effects, emotional wellbeing, nutrition, exercise, returning to work and ongoing monitoring and support.

For many patients and families, survivorship care helps navigate the transition from active treatment back to everyday life.

At Southern Cancer Care, we recognise the importance of supporting the whole cancer journey – from prevention and treatment through to recovery and long-term wellbeing.

What our community made possible.

Between 2002 and 2019, community fundraising, celebration events, bequests, sponsorships and in-kind support raised significant funds that were reinvested directly into improving cancer care facilities.

Every dollar raised helped transform the Cancer Care Centre into a more patient-focused space, improving access, comfort and care for thousands of people.

In recognition of National Cancer Survivors Day, we encourage you to join Cancer Council’s 50km Dog Walk for Cancer this June for the almost 1 in 2 Aussies impacted by cancer by the age of 85!

“Grab the leash, lace up, and let’s get those tails wagging for a great cause.“

By joining our Dog Walk for Cancer in June challenge, and by raising funds, you will be helping us fund cancer research, prevention, advocacy and support services. Get active and show your support for Aussies impacted by cancer.

Our story began with care, not bricks and mortar.

In 1998, Southern Cancer Care helped establish Bezzina House – a 15-unit facility just 100 metres from the Cancer Care Centre, providing accommodation for patients and families during cancer treatment.

From the beginning, the focus was simple: reduce the burden on people facing cancer and support them when they needed it most.

Bezzina House was opened in 1998 by the NSW Governor-General Gordon Samuels, thanks to funding from the wonderful St George and Sutherland Shire communities.

Bowel cancer is preventable and treatable.

Bowel cancer claims the lives of 103 Australians every week (5,372 people a year) – but it’s one of the most treatable types of cancer when detected early.

While the risk of bowel cancer increases significantly with age, the disease doesn’t discriminate, affecting people of all ages.

Know the symptoms and how to lower your risk.

What a busy week we are having! Today is International World Blood Cancer Day! On this day, we aim to raise awareness of blood cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. We also want to highlight the critical need for stem cell donors and the importance of ongoing research.

We are “thinking globally & acting locally at St George Cancer Care Centre!” Let’s improve our blood cancer outcomes together.

Today, we recognise the vital role clinical trials play in advancing cancer care and improving patient outcomes.

Many of the treatments now considered standard care were once made possible through clinical trials. From new therapies and treatment combinations to improved models of care, research gives patients access to innovation and helps shape the future of medicine.

Clinical trials are only possible through the dedication of researchers, clinicians, trial coordinators and, most importantly, the patients who choose to participate.

Southern Cancer Care is proud to support a community where research and innovation are helping deliver world-class cancer care close to home.

Thank you to the patients and carers who joined us for last Friday's Art Therapy Workshop at Hazelhurst Arts Centre.

A special thank you to Becky Louise for so generously sharing her story, creativity and compassion through art, and to Hazelhurst Arts Centre for providing such a welcoming space.

We are proud to support opportunities that nurture wellbeing alongside cancer care and bring people together through connection, reflection and creativity.

Becky will return in October to lead another art therapy workshop for 10 patients and carers. Contact us to join the waiting list.
