From 2024, Southern Cancer Care has partnered with artist Becky Louise to deliver art therapy workshops at Hazelhurst Gallery, creating space for reflection, expression and healing.

These workshops extend care beyond clinical treatment, recognising the emotional and human experience of cancer. Our next workshop in October is already fully booked, and we look forward to welcoming another group of patients and carers.

August is Appendix Cancer Awareness Month.

One of the treatments for appendix cancer and the rare condition pseudomyxoma peritonei, sometimes known as “jelly belly”, is peritonectomy.

This complex procedure involves surgically removing visible cancer and mucin from the abdomen, followed by chemotherapy delivered directly into the abdominal cavity. This can include heated chemotherapy, known as HIPEC, and chemotherapy delivered at body temperature, known as EPIC.

Peritonectomy is also used to treat peritoneal mesothelioma, some gastrointestinal cancers that have spread within the abdomen and some gynaecological cancers. It requires a large multidisciplinary team, including surgeons, medical oncologists, anaesthetists, intensivists, specialist nurses and allied health professionals.

For patients with appendix cancer, peritonectomy surgery has prolonged survival and, in some cases, can offer the possibility of cure.

This year marks 30 years since St George Hospital became the first centre in the Southern Hemisphere to perform the procedure. Professor David Morris pioneered the program at St George Hospital after training with American surgeon Dr Paul Sugarbaker, who developed the procedure.

Over the past 30 years, the St George Hospital team has performed approximately 2,000 peritonectomies, including 500 repeat peritonectomy procedures.

The St George Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Program has also played a significant role in research, contributing extensively to the published literature on peritonectomy, training medical and nursing professionals and developing drug therapies for mucin-producing cancers.

Professor David L. Morris is a foundation member of the Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International (PSOGI), while medical oncologist Associate Professor Winston Liauw is a faculty member of the European School of Peritoneal Surface Oncology (ESPSO).

Patients travel to St George Hospital from across Australia and internationally for treatment. The peritonectomy team is enormously grateful to Bezzina House Cancer Care Lodge for providing accommodation and support for patients and their families throughout their treatment.

From 2021, Southern Cancer Care committed to ongoing funding of cancer research grants, supporting studies that improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Through our partnership with the St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation, SCC has supported multiple research projects focused on real-world patient outcomes.

Dr Joseph Bucci, Lead Radiation Oncologist, St George Hospital Prostate Clinic states that this is an important recognition that screening for prostate cancer has changed considerably and we need to screen patients who are younger and those with a family history of prostate cancer.

New guidelines released today will change the way men are screened for prostate cancer and lead to less invasive testing.

Between 2016 and 2019, major redevelopment transformed the Cancer Care Centre. Staff were relocated, treatment spaces expanded, waiting areas improved and a quiet atrium added – all without closing the Centre.

The result was a more functional, compassionate environment designed around patient needs.
