Our team at Southern Cancer Care completely brightened up the Cancer Care Centre for Canteen's National Bandanna Day!

Staff from the St George Cancer Care Centre all proudly wore our colourful bandannas to show our absolute solidarity with young Australians facing a cancer diagnosis. More than anything, we hope our bright headwear brought some extra smiles to our patients and families attending the Cancer Care Centre today.

Pictured are some of our wonderful administration team – those busy on our frontline every day to welcome patients and their families, check you into your appointments, assist in the coordination of care and provide invaluable support to all our clinicians.

A massive shout-out and thank you to our senior radiation oncology dietitian, Nina, who went above and beyond to arrange bandannas for us today. Thanks to her coordination, every single one of us could get involved, look the part, and raise vital funds for Canteen Australia so they can continue providing life-changing counselling and peer support.

Thank you to everyone who donated and "showed up with a bandanna" today!

Southern Cancer Care is incredibly proud to congratulate Dr Li Xiong Chan, one of our Radiation Oncology Registrars, on a spectacular weekend of achievements at the RANZCR Annual Scientific Meeting in Christchurch, New Zealand. Li presented two research studies at the conference and was awarded both the prestigious Varian Prize and the FROGG Prize in recognition of the exceptional quality of his work. Adding to this success, Li also recently celebrated his first publication as a ‘first author’.

These achievements highlight a core pillar of our mission at Southern Cancer Care: investing in research to directly impact the future of oncology. We fund research because scientific discovery through research and clinical trials advances patient outcomes and lets us mentor our next generation of oncologists and clinicians.

Congratulations, Li, on this well-deserved recognition and thank you for your dedication to advancing cancer care and inspiring the future of our field.

St George Cancer Care Centre has a new Computed Tomography (CT) scan, which began operating on Monday 26 October 2026.

This CT scan is used to acquire information to prepare our patients for Radiotherapy.

The new scanner is state-of-the-art and is faster and more efficient than our previous scanner. This CT scan has improved image quality, increasing accuracy and allowing us to use more complex techniques for patients undergoing radiotherapy.

Well done to our physics and Radiation therapy staff who assisted with the installation and commissioning of our new CT.

Celebrating the future of cancer research at St George and Sutherland

The St George and Sutherland Hospitals Health Research Symposium, held on Thursday 15 October 2026, was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the next generation of cancer researchers alongside emerging and established research leaders, all working to improve outcomes for people affected by cancer. Through its collaboration with the SSMRF - St George & Sutherland Medical Research Foundation, Southern Cancer Care (SCC) remains committed to supporting dedicated cancer researchers and helping turn important research questions into discoveries that make a meaningful difference to cancer care. SCC is proud to support cancer research because today’s discoveries have the potential to transform tomorrow’s care.

The symposium highlighted the breadth and impact of cancer research underway, with an inspiring range of poster and oral presentations demonstrating innovation, collaboration, and a shared commitment to advancing cancer care.

This year, we were delighted to see several researchers connected with SCC and the Cancer Care Centre showcase their work:

Dr Joyce Chiu, an SCC research recipient, presented her research progress exploring cell migration and its potential to advance our understanding of cancer.

Goodnews Agare, one of our PhD students, shared his research investigating the microbiome in oral cavity cancer, in collaboration with UNSW and ANSTO.

Mak Wei Jun, a fourth-year UNSW medical student, presented research undertaken with the St George Cancer Care Research Group under the mentorship of Dr Julia Beretov and Dr Keven Ni. Their work explores cellular adaptations to advance our understanding of breast cancer and inform future treatment approaches.

Dr Johnson Yuen, one of our medical physicists, presented on behalf of the team working to develop safer and more efficient methods of delivering radiotherapy for lung cancer.

These presentations reflect the exciting work being undertaken across our research community and the importance of supporting researchers at every stage of their careers. From understanding the biology of cancer to refining treatment delivery, each discovery brings us closer to better outcomes for patients and their families.

A room full of creativity, connection and self-expression at Hazelhurst!

Becky welcomed a wonderful group of budding artists to Hazelhurst last Friday for a special art therapy session.

While our cancer survivors and carers are united by a cancer diagnosis, each person has their own unique story to tell. What brought this group together was the opportunity to step away from treatment, appointments and the demands of cancer, and take some time for themselves.

Through art, participants explored new ways to express themselves, connect with others, and make space for thoughts and feelings that can be difficult to put into words.

Southern Cancer Care is proud to continue sponsoring this important work, providing opportunities for cancer survivors and carers to nurture their wellbeing, creativity and connection with others.

Cancer survivors unite to build a new support haven.

For 20 years, Bay Babes has been bringing the Sutherland Shire community together to raise awareness of breast cancer and support local women and families affected by the disease.

On Friday, Bay Babes celebrated the 20th annual ‘The Girls Morning In’ at Tradies Gymea.

Dr Jodi Lynch, Medical Oncologist, spoke at the event, continuing her incredible commitment as a supporter and speaker every year for the past 20 years.

Congratulations to Bay Babes on 20 years of bringing people together through care, kindness and community support.

When you come in for radiotherapy, you see the radiation therapists, your oncologist, the machine itself. What you don't see is the small army working behind the scenes to make sure every single beam is safe, accurate, and exactly as prescribed – your medical physicists.

So what do they actually do?

Quality Assurance, every single day. Before your machine ever treats a patient, it's been checked, calibrated, and tested – often daily, weekly, and monthly – against strict standards. Our physicists run a tightly controlled QA program, catching tiny issues before they ever get the chance to affect your care.

They're the engineers' right hand. When something's slightly out of tolerance, our physicists work hand-in-hand with engineers to diagnose and fix it – fast – so your treatment is never compromised.

They check your plan before you ever get it. Every single radiotherapy plan is independently reviewed by a medical physicist to confirm it's optimised and can be delivered safely and accurately, exactly as your radiation oncologist intended.

They keep everyone safe. From radiation shielding to equipment safety checks, medical physicists ensure our facility is safe for patients, visitors, and staff alike.

They're highly trained specialists. Medical physicists complete years of specialised university training and clinical accreditation in radiation science, dosimetry, and treatment technology – all so that the science behind your treatment is rock solid.

Next time you're in for treatment, know that there's a whole team working quietly in the background – checking, verifying, and double-checking – so you can feel confident every step of the way.

Today is World Lymphoma Awareness Day, a day to raise awareness of lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and support the people and families affected by these blood cancers.

This year’s theme, Navigating Lymphoma and CLL Together, recognises that the challenges don’t stop at diagnosis. From understanding treatment options to navigating life during and after cancer, having access to trusted information, care and support can make an enormous difference.

To mark the day, we’re sharing some photos from last year’s World Lymphoma Awareness Day celebrations at the Cancer Care Centre at St George Hospital.
