The Internal Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand (IMSANZ) represents the interests of specialist General Internal Medicine physicians throughout Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. IMSANZ was formed in 1997 with the amalgamation of the Australian Society of Consultant Physicians in General Medicine (ASCPIGM) with our New Zealand counterparts (NZCPIGM). The realisation that ge

neral physicians needed a strong united approach to the rigors of the medico-political landscape in both countries led to unity of purpose across the Tasman. There are national and regional issues that require specific resolutions, but there is a greater need to promote the role of the generalist in holistic patient care within all health care systems.

🌟 Call for Abstracts – IMSANZ NZ Conference 2026 🌟

Are you ready to share your work with the wider internal medicine community? The IMSANZ Scientific Programme Committee invites Physicians and Trainees to submit abstracts for consideration in the 2026 IMSANZ NZ Conference. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your research, audit, case report, or innovative project — and gain valuable experience presenting to peers and senior clinicians.

All abstracts will be reviewed for inclusion in the oral and poster sessions, which will be held in person only. Spaces are limited, so we encourage you to get your submission in early! Presenters must register for the full conference and have approval from all co-authors before presenting.

Today we're in Adelaide hosting our Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Workshops. POCUS is an increasingly important tool for general physicians, supporting timely diagnosis, improving decision-making, and enhancing patient safety across a wide range of clinical settings. Building these capabilities is vital to the evolving role of general medicine.

We extend our sincere thanks to Fujifilm Sonosite for their generous provision of ultrasound equipment. Collaborations like these enable IMSANZ to deliver practical, high-quality education and ensure our members are equipped with the skills to meet the growing demands of modern healthcare.

We also thank our supervisors, as well as the local medical students who volunteered as patients. Their involvement made the workshop truly collaborative, giving students the opportunity to experience techniques firsthand..

National Reconciliation Week – 27 May to 3 June 2025

This Reconciliation Week, IMSANZ reflects on the theme “Bridging Now to Next,” a reminder of the importance of truth-telling, respect, and collective action in building a more just future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We recognise the strength, resilience and ongoing contributions of First Nations communities across Australia. As a trans-Tasman society, we also acknowledge the shared challenges and aspirations of Māori communities in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the common goal of improving health equity for Indigenous peoples in both countries.

IMSANZ supports the RACP Indigenous Strategic Framework, which provides a foundation for advancing cultural safety, equity, and meaningful change across the health sector.
