"I haven't got a house yet. Should I be worried about those things?" Says Melinda from Victoria. Housing affordability isn't just about buying a home anymore, it's a worry about being able to retire at the end of your career. We need housing reforms that treat homes as places to live, not commodities that drive inequality and push affordability further out of reach for the average Australian.

Housing has never been more unaffordable and wages aren't keeping up. But what do AMWU delegates have to say about it? We asked our some of our members what they thought about affordability and the future of how we build homes in Australia.

Today's decision by the Fair Work Commission is welcome relief for the lowest paid workers. They have been given a pay increase of 4.75%. However, there are workers like apprentices who are legally allowed to be paid below the minimum wage. After sustained pressure from unions, some junior rates have been abolished but not all.

For months, Liberty Bell Bay workers have lived with uncertainty about their jobs and their futures after the smelter was put into administration. This week's announcement of a wage support package provides hope on maintaining our sovereign capability and investing in regional Australia but hope alone doesn't pay the mortgage.

The AMWU expects any new owner of the smelter to provide clear commitments on employment, investment, and the long-term operation of this strategically important facility. These workers have stood by the smelter through difficult times, and they deserve nothing less than a secure future in return.

From 1 July 2026 super will be paid at the same time as wages for all workers, through the introduction of Payday Super. This is good news for Australian workers, helping retirement savings grow sooner, while reducing the risk of unpaid or delayed super payments.

This week the International Court of Justice affirmed that the right to strike is protected under international law. Big corporations and employer organisations attempted to overturn this right internationally, arguing it had no basis in law. Unions fought back, and won.

The ruling gives a huge boost to workers all over the world. The right to strike is strongly linked to better wages and safer workplaces the world over. It has also helped to reduce economic inequality and strengthen and promote democracy.

Without the right to withdraw labour collectively, employers hold all the power at the bargaining table. Bargaining therefore becomes little more than asking the boss nicely.

But under Australia’s current “protected action” system, workers face a labyrinth of red tape and legal hurdles before they can lawfully stop work. Secret ballots, notice periods and ministerial intervention all make it harder for workers to take collective action, while employers retain enormous economic power through restructures, outsourcing and lockouts.

A true right to strike is a worker's most powerful weapon, and the AMWU will campaign for the removal of all legislation that restricts our ability to defend ourselves from the greed and violence of private capital.

AMWU delegates, from Australia’s major energy regions, hit Parliament House during budget week to demand urgent action on the transition to new, high quality manufacturing jobs and industries.

Delegates met face to face with government MPs and senators with an AMWU pledge, calling on them to urgently support:
1. Funding commitments for transition projects for Collie
2. To ensure the Net Zero Economy Authority (NZEA) has authority, funding and a mandate to direct investment to high quality, skilled manufacturing jobs

A just transition means justice for workers ✊ And it's AMWU members who are leading the charge to make sure no worker and no community is left behind.
