Ten years of CUDL, Coming to an end

Dear CUDL volunteers,

For ten years, CUDL has fed our community, and it is because of you.

To our cooks, thank you. Week after week, you turned kitchens into places of solidarity. You prepared thousands of meals with care, skill and love, often at your own expense and always on your own time. Every plate you filled was a statement that no one in our community should go hungry.

To our drivers, thank you. You gave up your weekends, your petrol money and your sleep-ins to make sure the food got where it needed to go. Rain, heat or holidays, you showed up, and the work simply could not have happened without you.

And to every volunteer who served food, thank you. You did more than hand over a meal. You greeted people by name, you listened, you treated everyone with dignity and respect. That is what people will remember most.

As CUDL closes its operations in every state except Queensland, we want to let you know that we will be closing down payments. However, this is not the end of the work. We will soon be putting up new ways for you to continue supporting CUDL Queensland financially, so that the meals, the solidarity and the community care can carry on. We will share those details with you as soon as they are ready.

A decade of feeding our community is something to be deeply proud of. Thank you for every meal, every kilometre driven and every conversation shared. It has been an honour.

Statement on the Bondi Attack

We are horrified by the events of the December 14th cowardly attack at Bondi Beach. The loss of life in such a meaningless act of violence is a tragedy that affects us all deeply.

Amongst those who were injured were several volunteers of our broader Community Union Defence League Sydney network. We send our condolences to all those mourning loved ones and wish a hasty recovery to those who were injured in the shameful incident.

As with many other organisations, we are calling on our supporters to contribute to the blood drive by donating and promoting this call for donations by public health authorities.

Despicable acts like this and the conditions that promote them have no place in our society. We must take it upon ourselves to develop unity in the face of division and have courage against the cowards who promote such hate.

In this, we take inspiration and hope from the actions of the ordinary people who stepped up to protect those around them and look out for their communities.

While there is a deep and divisive history of racism and violence in this country, there is also a proud history of regular people standing together in defiance.

It is our duty to carry these values of bravery and solidarity forward and to push back against those who would take advantage in these times of vulnerability to promote division and hate in our society.

With this at heart, we reaffirm our determination to build a society based on the principles of socialism and peace.

2025 Windradyne Wiradjuri Commemorative Walk

After setting up camp last night on Wiradjuri Country close to Windradyne’s gravesite, the Wiradjuri Homelands Campaign began its journey to Parramatta. This journey commemorates the anniversary of the Wiradjuri travelling from their Country near Bathurst to Parramatta to make a statement to the Governor.

Supporters of the campaign will be following Uncle Paul Towney’s recreation of Windradyne’s 1824 journey by foot that he undertook last year for the 200th anniversary. They will be camping at Lake Wallace tonight, before travelling to Parramatta at Old Governor’s House at 10:00am on Friday for a ceremonial commemoration and discussion of the Wiradjuri Homelands campaign.

We are inviting all supporters of First Nations peoples to attend on Friday for this important event to build support for the Wiradjuri Homelands Campaign going into 2026. Please reach out to if you require any further information or would like to get involved in the campaign.

CUDL Martin Place will be changing to service once every second week. This is due to an increase in other services in and around Martin Place, and difficulty in securing supervisors for the Street Kitchen. WHAT'S HAPPENING?

New legislation has been introduced that threatens the rights of working people, volunteer-led organisations, and our democratic freedoms. It undermines the rule of law and denies individuals the right to a fair trial. This law isn’t just about unions; it sets a dangerous precedent that puts everyone at risk.

WHY SHOULD YOU BE CONCERNED?

1. This is an attack on the Rule of Law. This legislation allows people to be targeted without evidence, denying them a fair trial. It threatens the presumption of innocence until proven guilty—a basic principle of justice that protects all of us.

2. Freedom of association under threat: the bill attacks individuals based solely on theit associations, meaning you could be punished for simply knowing someone accused of wrongdoing. This erodes our freedom and privacy.

3. This threatens all volunteer organisations. Today, it's unions. Tomorrow, it could be churches, community groups, or any organisation that doesn’t align with government views. This law gives politicians and appointed administrators unchecked power over any group they don't agree with.

4. No accountability. The legislation shields appointed administrators from accountability, even if they abuse their power. This isn’t hypothetical — it’s happening. Recent reports from Victoria reveal administrators engaging in inappropriate behaviour, demonstrating the real dangers of unchecked authority. Is this the sort of community we want to build?
