CWHC - Cumberland Women's Health Centre A non-profit community based organisation providing women's health and DV response services These areas still remain the focus of the Centre today

Cumberland Women’s Health Centre (CWHC) is a non-profit community based organisation which was established 26 years ago to provide women’s health services and domestic violence specialist response services to women in the Parramatta, Holroyd, Auburn and Hills area. When the Centre first started in the early 90’s focus was placed upon providing services surrounding anti-violence towards women (particularly domestic violence), support for new and emerging groups within the community and activities for the elderly. The Centre recognised these areas as ones where there were gaps in service provision, especially with the provision of crisis assistance in the 4 Cumberland regions.

World Menopause Day brings attention to the experiences of women worldwide. πŸ’œπŸ’›

Menopause remains massively under researched, Harvard Medical School (Walsh, 2024) found that "less than 1 percent of published studies considered menopause", resulting in blind-spots in women's medical care.

This year's theme, "Chronic Pain at Midlife", highlights the prevalence of chronic pain developing during and after experiencing menopause. The International Menopause Society has developed a clear fact sheet for those seeking information on managing chronic pain resulting from menopause.

National Carers Week is an important time to recognise and celebrate the efforts of the more than 3 million Australians who provide unpaid care to family and friends πŸ’œπŸ’›

The efforts of carers provide necessary support, benefitting the lives of those they care for, but they themselves often miss out on the assistance and appreciation they deserve. Carers can access support and resources through Carer Gateway.

Today is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. πŸ’œπŸ’›

Today we take the time to mourn the infants lost and support those who are grieving them. It is also a time to advocate for effective and informed prenatal care and education around miscarriage, stillbirth, ectopic pregnancies and other causes of infant loss.

October 11th is the International Day of the Girl Child, celebrating girls and advocating for their rights on an international level! πŸ’œπŸ’›

This year's theme is focused on ending child marriage and investing in girl's rights, an incredibly important theme given that 1/5 girls are married before turning 18, increasing their chances of intimate partner violence and maternal mortality.

Today and everyday, we celebrate and uplift the voices of girls. Together we can work towards a safer and fairer world, allowing girls the freedom to pursue the lives they want through education and empowerment.

October is Mental Health Month and today, October 10th, is World Mental Health day! πŸ’œπŸ’›

We encourage you to spend some time today caring for your own mental health, focusing on your unique experiences to discover what does and doesn't work for you. The solutions that others find won't always work for everyone, so don't get bogged down when something doesn't work for you; instead, recognise it doesn't work and adapt.

With the input of people with lived experience of mental health conditions, we can work towards making services more equitable, more effective and more compassionate.

Today is the International Day of Non-Violence πŸ’œπŸ’›

As the name would suggest, it encourages people, movements, and governments to seek non-violent solutions. The 2nd of October is the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi and so the international day, very fittingly, highlights the importance of social justice and posits that it should be sought through non-violent means such as civil disobedience.

It's nearly October, which means it's nearly Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 🩷

Around 1 in 7 women in 1 in 600 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in their life, and around 20,000 people in Australia are diagnosed each year. This October, we take the time to learn about Breast Cancer, its symptoms, its treatments and how we can help those battling it.

Learning how to perform a self-examination and the signs and symptoms associated with breast cancer is a good way to increase your chances of getting diagnosed and access to treatments as soon as possible if cancer does develop.

This month, we encourage you to seek out ways to support the people dealing with breast cancer and the research towards stopping it in its tracks.

Check out the National Breast Cancer Foundation or the Breast Cancer Network Australia to learn more.
