MRL is an active Community group dedicated to the natural environment of the Sunshine Coast. Support us by becoming a member of the group.

“Proudly Supported by the Sunshine Coast Council’s grants program’, Mooloolah River Landcare is home to over 25,000 native plants that we sell inexpensively to the community and use for our numerous tree plants around the coast. MRL have planted over 1 million trees over the last 8 years and will continue to support our rivers, creeks and wildlife on the Sunny Coast. If anyone would like to come into the nursery and help with potting up they are most welcome. We also have a water monitoring group.

Pollinator week is happening from 7 - 15 November 2026!

MRL has a large range of native, pollinator attracting, plants available. Come in and check them out. We're open Sat 9am to 1pm and Mon, Tues & Wed 8am to 4pm.

Want to learn about how to help save our native bees? If you're a local gardener, you have likely noticed the drop in bee numbers visiting your plants, compared to previous years.

We have secured the very knowledgable Ian Driver to come along and present a Native Bee Workshop for us at MRL.

Learn how you can create a welcoming home for them in your backyard through plants and shelters.

Participants will also have the opportunity to make a simple, bee-friendly hotel and to sample native bee honey. Please book your spot for the talk, and then add on a bee hotel kit if you wish to stick around and take home your own backyard bee hotel!
Bee friendly plants will also bee available for purchase. Numbers are limited so bookings are essential.

“A time to connect and celebrate. Together we shine!” was the theme for the 2026 Seniors Month this October.

Our Senior's Program - "Connections, Naturally!" kicked off on Thursday 22nd October, despite the weather and downpour of rain. We had a lovely (albeit smaller than originally planned) group attend the launch morning, which was catered for by Sally and Bec from Simplee Sweet on Buderim. Shout out to their ability to make delicious scones which went down a treat!

The morning was about building connections, and we explored various activities and other volunteer groups in our area that offer opportunities to be active and involved in our community.

We also outlined the upcoming series of events that we've organised, aimed at the over 50's amongst us, thanks to support form the Queensland Government COTA (Council on the Ageing). The next event will be focused on building knowledge and skills surrounding wildlife monitoring, surveys and citizen science, with our own Bug Lady Jess, avid bird enthusiast Rod and special guest presenters Hollow Log Homes. Did you know?
That we collect local seed to produce the plants you see on our benches.🌱
We have permits from SC council to collect from many areas of the Sunshine Coast. Today’s seed collection travels were north of the Maroochy River.
Collecting,
Cupaniopsis -Tuckeroo
Cyclophyllum coprosmoides- Coastal canthium
Acacia sophorae- Coastal wattle
Melaleuca quinquenervia- paperbark tree.
Alphitonia excelsa- Red ash or bushman’s soap
I also checked on some others to see if they are ripe yet.
Clerondendrum floribundum
Elaeocarpus obovatus and Tetragonia - warrigal greens.

The seed collected today will now need to be recorded, cleaned and stored or sowed depending on the species.

On Saturday 21st October MRL hosted Joan Heavey’s Carnivorous plants workshop.
Australia is a biodiversity hotspot for these meat eating species.
An enthusiastic group learned all about the fascinating plants.

The main species discussed were
Sundews (Drosera)
Bladderworts (Utricularia)
Rainbow Plants (Byblis)
Waterwheel Plant (Aldrovanda vesiculosa)
Tropical Pitcher Plants (Nepenthes)
