Hi Indoga fam, let’s meet our MVP of the Year!

Meet Iqbal Saleh Sitompul (Iqbal), one of the outstanding members of our community.

Iqbal is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree in Agribusiness at the School of Agriculture and Food Sustainability, UQ. Even more impressively, he also completed his Master’s degree at UQ.

Originally from Indonesia, Iqbal chose UQ and Australia because of the university’s strong reputation for academic excellence, supportive learning environment, and commitment to student wellbeing. Combined with Australia’s safe, welcoming, and multicultural lifestyle, UQ became the perfect place for him to pursue his academic journey. Motivated by these opportunities and UQ’s strong international network, he has dedicated himself to advancing his studies in Australia.

Some of Iqbal’s achievements and experiences so far:

✨ Participated in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition at UQ and won the People’s Choice Award at the faculty level.

✨ Completed the Teaching Foundations Program for early-career educators in higher education at UQ.

✨ Participated in the Mentor Get Set Program at UQ Gatton in 2024.

✨ Served as Chief of Education and Culture for the UQ Indonesian Student Association (UQISA) in 2024.

✨ Served as Vice President of the Indonesian Student Community at UQ Gatton (INDOGA) in 2023.

✨ Currently serves as Secretary of the UQ Agrifood Research Student Association (UQ ARSA) for 2025-2026.

✨ Represents HDR students as an HDR Representative in the Faculty of Science.

✨ Actively participates in conferences and academic activities, including those organized by the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES), and contributes to research initiatives such as the MyINDAH Diet Project

What else should we know about him?

🏃‍♂️ Jogging is one of Iqbal’s favorite hobbies, especially in the evenings along the Brisbane River. For him, enjoying the beautiful scenery and vibrant city atmosphere is a great way to recharge and stay energized.

👨‍🍳 He also loves cooking for friends, and his signature dish is Tahu Bakso, a delicious Indonesian specialty featuring meatballs stuffed in tofu.

3MT® Heat – Gatton Campus

Hi Indoga fam, let’s meet our next MVP of the year!

She is a Ph.D. student, a mother, and a lecturer at Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia. Meet Martia Rani Tacharina (Martia).

Driven by her lifelong passion for nature and animals, Martia is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Bat Virology and Immunology at the UQ Veterinary School through the prestigious LPDP Scholarship.

What attracted her to UQ is its strong expertise in wildlife and conservation, not to mention its dedicated Bat Hospital!

Let’s get to know her beyond academia. Martia loves traveling and cooking—a perfect combination! She initially started cooking out of necessity, but eventually discovered that she genuinely enjoys it.

And that’s not all. Here are some of her achievements and experiences so far:

✨ Published a high-impact research paper during her Ph.D. journey.
✨ Completed a two-week field placement at the Bat Hospital.
✨ Became a member of the Australasian Bat Society (ABS), Australian Society for Virology (ASV), and World Society for Virology (WSV).
✨ Undertook a six-week intensive bioinformatics training program and research visit at The University of Nottingham, UK.
✨ Participated in various training programs offered by UQ and QCIF, including workshops on Galaxy, Python, and R.

Before completing her Ph.D., Martia hopes to fulfill one item on her bucket list: embarking on a safari camping adventure around Queensland in a campervan.

Let’s wish her the very best in achieving this dream before graduation! She is truly one of the remarkable members of the Gatton campus community who deserves recognition and appreciation.
