Alexandra RSL, cenotaph for Vietnam Veterans Day 2026.
Today, 18th August 2026, we mark Vietnam Veterans' Day and the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. On this day in 1966, 108 Australian & New Zealand soldiers of D company, 6RAR, stood against overwhelming odds in a rubber plantation under torrential rain. Outnumbered more than twenty to one, they held firm through fierce fighting, supported by artillery and a courageous relief force. Eighteen Australians were killed and many more wounded. Their courage remains one of the defining moments of Australia's Vietnam War.
We honour all who served - 60,000 Australians who answered the call between 1962 and 1975, those who never came home, and those who carried the physical and invisible scars of service for decades after. Many returned to a divided nation that did not always welcome them. Today we remember them with the respect they always deserved.
To every Vietnam veteran and their families: thank you. Your service, sacrifice will never be forgotten.
Lest we forget.
