Sacred Heart Mission

Sacred Heart Mission We assist hundreds of people who are experiencing homelessness to find shelter, food, care & support

At Sacred Heart Mission, we welcome and accept people as they are. We recognise that everybody’s journey is unique and we work to provide people with support that is effective and carefully tailored to their individual needs. No matter where they are in their life, we are here to support them. It all starts with welcome, a meal, a relationship…

Our services address the immediate concerns of peopl

e experiencing homelessness but also practice early intervention. By working with vulnerable people and attempting to address the causes and effects of poverty and disadvantage at an early stage, our services help prevent more people entering the cycle of poverty and disadvantage.

2014 saw the introduction of a service model developed to guide the work we do and how we do it, across the organisation as a whole. By aligning the service model with our vision and mission, we are putting clients at the centre of our service delivery and we will work with them to achieve real and sustainable changes driven by their aspirations. The service model will:
* Provide a consistent approach, a framework for a whole-of organisation response.
* Allow us to apply the best use of resources and increase the impact we have in the community.
* Provide us with a shared focus as an organisation on meeting our vision and mission.
* Focus on the benefits to our clients to empower them to direct their own lives and overcome the effects of poverty.
* Ensure we have a shared clarity of purpose as an organisation with a focus on practices that are outcomes-driven. Key components of the service model are:
* Three distinct types of services with clearly defined functions.
* Five outcomes against which all service responses will be mapped.
* Clear process for access, identification, planning and service response.
* Creating partnerships to help deliver individual and organisational outcomes. Whether it’s women’s services or aged care, crisis and long-term, supported accommodation, or counselling and health services, support from our organisation is tailored to each person's needs with respect and compassion.

Finding a place to park became the most important part of Grace's day. It wasn't parking inspectors she was trying to avoid – it was the people who'd break into the car while she slept, or the local residents who'd find out she was homeless and make her move on.

She says women like her get labelled 'difficult' when they're just fighting for their survival, day after day.

Your tax-deductible donation can help women like Grace to break the cycle of homelessness.

Kindness begets kindness, right? Well, a group of incredibly kind supporters have just agreed to match every donation made to Sacred Heart Mission until we raise $210k to keep our Women's Services running.

So when you give now, every dollar you give will be matched. It'll do twice as much to support women who are facing homelessness.

C'mon – do something kind and double the difference it'll make before June 30.

Lily was couch-surfing and house sitting because she couldn't afford rent. She'd spent all her savings on study, so she could get a job again.

She didn't need more hoops to jump through, or more doors closed in her face. She just needed someone to listen and help her find somewhere safe to stay.

You made that happen for Lily. And donating at tax time can help more women to find a way out of homelessness.

University educated. A career across UK and Asia. Resilient, capable, determined.

And suddenly homeless in her 50s.

Every time Lily sought help, she was given more hoops to jump through.

But at the Women's House, she found people who'd listen and understand. And that's what she really needed to find a safe home and kick-start her career again.

Your tax-deductible donation can make a real difference to the growing number of women in Lily's situation.

More than 500 people told the City of Port Phillip that they did not want the law changed to penalise people who are sleeping rough. That's 76% of everyone who participated in the council's community consultation.

When so many people tell you it’s a bad idea, doubling down on it seems baffling.

So all of us will be closely watching the implementation of this unnecessary law change. And none of us will be silent about the harm it causes.

What happens when our community comes together with compassion? Incredible things. ❤️

Thank you to the Catholic Parish of Sacred Heart and St. Columba who, in a beautiful community effort, came together throughout March to celebrate International Women's Day with a month-long fundraising initiative in support of Sacred Heart Mission’s Women’s House.

With the support of the Parish Development Leadership Team, including Fr. John who provided encouragement at each Mass, the community collected an incredible number of material donations for women in crisis. But it didn't stop there, they also raised $1,620! Providing women with something so important; dignity, choice, and a chance to take their next step forward.

Thank you for standing with all women, and for showing what it truly means to be a community with heart. 🌈

Against the wishes of the community, the City of Port Phillip decided last night to proceed with a law change that lets council officers confiscate the blankets and sleeping bags of people sleeping rough.

They made this choice even though 74% of respondents to their own community consultation said the measure was cruel and needless.

Council has now promised to implement a protocol that prioritises outreach and engagement, with punitive measures as a last resort only.

We will be watching, and we will hold them to their word.

Tonight, councillors in City of Port Phillip will vote on a law change that enables them to confiscate the belongings of people sleeping rough.

A total of 708 people shared their views in a community consultation. 76% were opposed to Council taking people's survival items. And more than 15% of them had direct, lived experience of homelessness.

It's a powerful message to Council, calling for practical rather than punitive responses to homelessness.

We're grateful to everyone who shared their views, and we hope Council will listen tonight.
