End of Semester Study Events πŸ“š
’Tis the season to cram for final exams!

We know how challenging exam season can be, which is why we’re once again running our study events to help you revise, practice questions, and stay productive alongside your peers. And of course, we’ll be supplying free food to keep everyone going πŸ•

Please note that not all events will have course tutors available.

This semester, we’ll be running five study events across the coming weeks, with each event covering two courses simultaneously so you can study with fellow classmates. All the events will run from 6:00pm–8:30pm. Please make sure to register on Rubric or the QR code so we can organize enough food for everyone!

Jane Street Internships and Events
Hi Everyone,
Check out this message from our Partner, Jane Street!

Jane Street has a number of events going on and has also opened up its December 2026 - February 2027 Hong Kong Internships!

You can apply to an internship in Hong Kong in different areas including Quantitative Trading, Strategy & Product and Software Engineering.

Over the course of a Jane Street internship, you’ll explore ways to approach and solve problems through challenging classes and interactive discussions, with endless opportunities to put those learnings to use. If you haven’t thought about a career in finance, you’re in good company. Many folks at Jane Street don’t come from a financial background. Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis, and they suggest you apply as soon as you feel prepared.

If you want to get to know Jane Street better before you apply for an internship you can check out two upcoming events.

A Virtual Get to Know Us: Strategy and Product event on Thursday the 21st of May. You can sign up below before they close on Tuesday, May 19.

The 2026 SEE Program for students interested in any area of internship who can enjoy talks, activities, and social events at the Jane Street Hong Kong office. Selected students will arrive in and depart from Hong Kong according to their selected track dates. Jane Street will cover all travel expenses to and from Hong Kong, including meals, housing, and a variety of social events. Apply below by 1:59 AM AEST Monday, May 18.

πŸ’šπŸ‘©β€πŸ’» Girls' Programming Network Canberra is running again!πŸ‘©β€πŸ’»πŸ’š

At GPN we run free, hands-on programming workshops for girls and gender-diverse kids in grades 6–12. All of our events are run by our amazing women and gender-diverse volunteer tutors who have a wide range of experiences with programming. The one thing all our tutors have in common? A passion for helping the next generation of programmers, mentoring our students and continuing to grow in their own skills and development.

GPN is seeking students and tutors for its upcoming term 2 event!

In this workshop, we'll be making a text-based game. We will teach the computer to play Guess Who! against us, and we will put our own spins on this classic game!

Lunch and snacks are provided on the day.

Student sign up link: https://events.humanitix.com/gpn-canberra-term-2-2026-2dah8ggt

Volunteers get to see the content before the event, so if you know variables, if statements, and loops you are qualified ;) There’s even a practice party for GPN tutors this weekend to meet fellow tutors and go through the content and events of the workshop!

Please note volunteers must have/be able to get a Working With Vulnerable People check (applying for volunteering purposes is free).

Register your interest to be a tutor here: https://forms.gle/zQ6rm4MU1s4LeY4n6

πŸ’ Ever wondered what your research looks like when applied in fast, real-world systems?

's PhD Quant Focus is a two-day program, designed to give PhD students exposure to how areas like machine learning, statistics and applied mathematics are used in quantitative trading. You'll work through practical problems and see how ideas hold up under real constraints. πŸ’‘

If you’re currently completing a PhD, or know someone who is, applications are open for the Sydney program. πŸ‘

Lifetime issues derived from unsafe rust
Rust is the (not so) new language to join the likes of C and C++, a compiled language ideal for systems programming. One of the biggest claims for rust is being memory-safe - that if one stays inside safe rust, they should never encounter memory corruption or undefined behavior. But rust has an escape hatch - 'unsafe' - often used for things such as FFI or handling MMIO. Through unsafe, one can implement unsound behavior - that can potentially lead to the horrors of undefined behavior. This talk focuses particularly on lifetime issues, how they can lead to fun things like dangling pointers and use-after-frees, and how to write your unsafe code properly to avoid such headaches.

Speaker: Zac

Zac is a security researcher at infosect. He's best nerd-sniped by asking him about some mix of binary exploitation, fuzzers, rust, and operating systems.
