This week a single mum walked through our doors with her three young boys - full of energy and always hungry.

Like so many families right now, she shared how overwhelming the rising cost of living has become and how hard it is to keep food on the table. Fighting back tears, she quietly told us:
β€œIf it wasn’t for Gateway’s Food Centre, we would go hungry.”

Moments like these are a reminder that behind every trolley is a family doing their very best. Thanks to the support of our community and groups like the buderimfoundation, families can access affordable groceries, kindness and hope when they need it most.

Have you heard of the working poor?

Gateway Care has found itself in a whole new world since the government announced the 'rise in cost of living' a number of years ago. Previously we were exclusively for centrelink card holders, but it became increasingly more difficult to turn people away when we started to hear people's stories.

One of our staff recently met a new member with this story.

"I'm a nurse, and my husband runs a small business. Our rent was $550, and our landlord sold the house to an investor who thankfully kept us in, but our rent jumped up to $850. At that time there were no other houses cheaper to hold us and our 4 kids, so we decided to stay. But that extra $300 a week has crippled us. We heard about this place, and was hoping we could sign up - but we don't have a centrelink card."

How could we turn these people away. This is the new class of citizens, and makes up a large majority of the Sunshine Coast. Working hard, trying to provide for their family, but struggling to make it all work.

Maybe this is your story, come on in - we won't turn you away.

All are welcome.

This crate of fresh fruit? It was heading for the bin. πŸŠπŸŽπŸ‹

Thanks to our food rescue team, it's now sitting in our centre - ready to go home with a family who needs it.

Every week, our Gateway Care Food Rescue team rescues over 40,000kg of food from local supermarkets, grocers, and suppliers - food that would otherwise end up in landfill. We sort it, rescue what's good, and get it to families doing it tough at heavily discounted prices.

A massive shoutout to our incredible Food Rescue team who make this happen week in, week out. This work takes heart, a lot of hustle, and a whole lot of care - and you guys bring all three. πŸ’™

Whether it's a crate of fruit or a trolley full of groceries, every rescue means a family eats tonight. That's what this is all about.

Please consider supporting us - donations, volunteering, or spreading the word all help. Head to www.gatewaycare.org.au for more information.

πŸ›’ Honest question: how many of you have thrown out perfectly good food just because the date on the packet passed?

We've all done it. But here's the thing - best before β‰  expired. There's a real difference, and understanding it could save you money, reduce waste, and make you a lot less anxious in the kitchen.

Best before = quality, not safety.

It's a manufacturer's estimate of when food is at peak flavour and texture - not a cliff-edge after which it becomes harmful. According to Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), best before dates indicate the period during which food retains its quality.

You can legally sell and eat food past its best before date.

Here's the key difference:
πŸ“… Best before - food may lose some quality (taste, texture, colour) after this date, but it's generally still safe to eat.

⚠️ Use by - this one is about safety. Don't eat food past its use-by date. That's the one to take seriously, especially on meat, fish, and dairy (Gateway Care does not sell product past it's USE BY DATE).

Australians throw out around 7.6 million tonnes of food every year, and a big chunk of that is food that was perfectly safe to eat.

So next time you're about to chuck that slightly-past-date tin of chickpeas or bag of oats - give it a sniff and a squiz first. Chances are it's absolutely fine. πŸ‘
