Sewwandi stays true to herself and finds success 📚

Articulate and professional with a degree in Commerce obtained in Sri Lanka, along with several years of experience working in administrative and finance roles, Sewwandi thought it would be relatively easy to find a job she'd love in Darwin.

However, like many other migrants, she found that reality fell far short of her expectations; the job market was extremely competitive and, despite consistent applications, she had no success securing a job – until she visited the STEPS Adult Migrant English (AMEP) site in Casuarina.

Meet Melissa! 👋

Melissa is an LLND (Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital skills) trainer at our Bundaberg site, and the role has taught her a lot about adapting to change in a dynamic learning environment.

"We don't just focus on the delivery of the necessary units," she said. "We all do our absolute best to make the learning as engaging as possible for each and every participant."

"I've also learnt that in our afternoon UNO Club, everyone plays to win!" She shared with a laugh.

She's worked in restaurants across Europe, set sail on the Pacific Ocean, and helped migrants learn English as a second language here in Australia. Now, she teaches Cairns community members how to improve their reading, writing, numeracy, and digital skills and develop their confidence for a more fulfilling life 💙

Elba's powerful new start in Australia 💙

When Elba arrived in Darwin in 2025, she spoke almost no English and was facing the challenge of starting over in a new country over 15,000 kilometres from her home in Guatemala.

Today, she is using the English skills she's developing through the STEPS Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) to write a book about her journey, one that has been shaped both by unimaginable challenges and remarkable resilience and hope.

Cairns STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program participant Loretta (pictured here with STEPS Participant Support Officer Chloe) has successfully completed the CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support qualification! 🌟

Throughout her studies, Loretta demonstrated a great work ethic and amazing initiative – and these qualities have only grown stronger through her education and experience.

Rather than undertaking unpaid work placement, Loretta was able to secure paid employment in the support industry and had her shifts verified as part of the course's work placement requirements.

When she handed in her final paperwork and completed her qualification, she had a giant grin on her face, excited to take the next step in her career.

Since finishing her time with the STEPS SEE Program, Loretta has been hard at work. However, she recently had the chance to catch up with some STEPS trainers and current participants at the Cairns Disability Expo, where she was clearly flourishing and connecting with professionals in her sector.

The STEPS Cairns team is over the moon to see Loretta's success, and are grateful to be part of her journey 💙

Caleb joined our Townsville STEPS Work Mates Program because he wanted support in securing employment.

While his primary goal is to save money to repair his car, Caleb also wanted to strengthen his employability skills and feel more confident in job interviews.

He and his Work Mates Employment Support Coach discussed his goals and explored suitable career paths before they began developing the skills needed to enter the workforce.

STEPS also partnered with Caleb's employment referrer organisation Breakthru and used their combined expertise and employer networks to find a great job opportunity: a work trial with Myute Car Rentals Townsville.

Caleb had the full support of his Employment Support Coach, who provided tailored coaching, interview prep practise, and ongoing check-ins and encouragement.

He quickly impressed his employer with his positive attitude and strong work ethic; his managers noticed Caleb's attention to detail when car detailing, which led to more shifts and a permanent offer of employment!

Congratulations to Caleb – your hard work has paid off, and feedback from your workplace shows that you are a reliable and valued team member 💪

Our STEPS SEE participants have learning activities down to a science 🧪

From 15 to 23 August, our STEPS SEE Program participants and trainers in Casuarina made the most of National Science Week.

The classes were challenged to complete one STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activity each day.
