The Zonta Club of Bundaberg Inc was chartered on 24 August 1990 (over 32 years) and is one of the most established charity organisations in Bundaberg.

We are an active force in the Bundaberg community, contributing with local service and advocacy projects and collaboration with other groups

We always welcome new members, email us for more information In 2023, the club was awarded the Bundaberg Regional Council's Community Group of the Year" Award in the Australia Day Awards. We meet on the FIRST Tuesday of the month at Rowers on the River from 6pm for our
monthly, by invitation and member, Business Dinner Meeting. The Club Members are dedicated supporters of the goals and ideals of Zonta International. The Club has been a very active force in the Bundaberg Community, contributing by way of service and advocacy projects. Locally we co-ordinate and support:

- A Young Women in Public Affairs award. The Award recognises young women, ages 16-19, who demonstrate superior leadership skills and a commitment to public service and civic causes and encourages them to continue their participation in public and political life. - 2 x STEPS programs in partnership with CQU - These scholarships provides recognition and financial assistance to a first year female Bachelor student residing and studying in the Bundaberg Region. https://www.cqu.edu.au/courses/study-information/work-and-study-preparation/steps

- In Bundaberg we provide financial bursaries to girls transitioning from Grade 6 in local State Primary schools (South, Walkervale, Bundaberg West, Rosedale, Gin Gin, Thabeban & Burnett Heads to Middle School Grade 7 in local High Schools. These yearly bursaries are presented to the students at year end school presentations with monies paid to their high school of choice.

- In 2023, we have introduced the Zonta Club of Bundaberg’s Wide Bay TAFE Education Award. The cash prizes will be awarded to two different female students enrolled at TAFE Bundaberg Campus in a non-school-based course. The recipients must be enrolled in a non-traditionally female course e.g., electrical, building and construction, agriculture, horticulture, cookery (Chef), Information and Digital Technologies etc. Our Inaugural 2023 award recipient was Hannah Broughton

- Co-ordinate a local 16 Days of Activism Campaign to End Violence against Women and Girls which runs from 25 November to 10 December each year.

- Financial and wellness workshops covering finance, real estate, legal, travel, traditional and complementary therapies, fun activities and much more.

- Support ‘EDON Place' a Non-government community-based organisation providing specialist domestic and family violence services in Bundaberg and North Burnett Regions.

- Support Phoenix House a counselling service for sexual assault victims.

- Production of STOP cards which has contact details for all the local community and welfare organisations.

- Ongoing Australia-wide projects include making cushions for local breast cancer patients. https://www.bcna.org.au/

- Plus, many more adhoc activities from time to time. Just some of our fun fundraising & social activities include:

Zonta Club of Bundaberg – we are group of women who encourage each other, involve each other, support each other, empower each other, educate each other, enjoy each other’s company, and allow each member to do what they can when they can for the great cause of Zonta International. The Zonta Club of Bundaberg Inc joins Zonta International in championing women’s leadership and participation in all spheres of society.

Women in public life, including all levels of government, journalists, activists, professional and sports women often face high levels of harassment, threats, psychological and now more commonly physical violence linked to their gender.

These attacks not only endanger individual women but also hinder gender equality and democratic participation.

The Zonta Club of Bundaberg Inc aligns itself with Zonta International when we say NO to violence against women and girls and is committed to building a better world for women and girls.

Members of the Zonta Club of Bundaberg were pleased to attend the emPower Breakfast, hosted by Bundaberg Central Rotary Club. It was a wonderful morning creating opportunities to engage young people in meaningful conversations about healthy, respectful relationships and the importance of building a culture of respect, equality and understanding.

Thank you to Rotary Central for hosting such a valuable initiative and helping empower the next generation to create positive change.

October is Sexual Violence Awareness Month, and Phoenix House is calling on the Bundaberg community to be part of creating a future where sexual violence is prevented, people feel safe to seek support, and those impacted can access specialist services when they need them.

This year’s theme, No More Silence – Prevent Sexual Violence, recognises that preventing sexual violence is a shared responsibility and, that prevention, community awareness and access to specialist support must remain part of the same conversation.

Sexual violence affects people across Australian communities. Australian Bureau of Statistics data estimates that more than one in five women and around one in 16 men have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15.

Sexual violence also remains significantly under-reported to police. Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data shows that, among women whose most recent sexual assault by a male occurred in the previous 10 years, fewer than one in 10 contacted police about that incident.

For Phoenix House, this highlights the importance of ensuring people impacted by sexual violence know they can access safe, confidential and specialist support, regardless of whether they choose to report their experience to police.

Phoenix House CEO Tara Perkins said Sexual Violence Awareness Month was an opportunity to strengthen community understanding of both prevention and support.

“Behind every statistic is a person, and every person’s experience and pathway to support is different. Preventing sexual violence requires all of us. We each have opportunities to contribute through the way we talk about consent and respectful relationships, the attitudes and behaviours we challenge, and how we respond when someone reaches out for support.

“Prevention is essential, but it is only one part of the conversation. When someone is impacted by sexual violence, they also need to know that safe, specialist support is available and that they can reach out when they are ready."

Throughout October, Phoenix House will take the message No More Silence – Prevent Sexual Violence into the community, encouraging people to learn, listen, talk about prevention and know where specialist support is available.

Zonta Club of Bundaberg is proud to support this wonderful and important community event.

What does it mean to be a good man, a supportive mate, a positive role model, or a great dad in today's world?

Dads, Lads and Mates: Conversations That Matter is a Free interactive community event designed to bring fathers, sons and mates together to explore the relationships that shape our lives.

Whether you're a dad, stepdad, grandfather, uncle, coach, mentor, son, teenager or mate, you'll leave with new perspectives on how we can support each other to be better men, better mates and better role models.

Recommended for ages 13 and over.

The Queensland Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council, in partnership with Bundaberg Regional Council, The DFV Free Working Group and Edon Place are hosting an event at Bundaberg Civic Centre on Tuesday 6 October.

This will be an inaugural and interactive community event designed to bring fathers, sons and mates together to create opportunities for authentic discussion, shared stories and meaningful reflection.

It will feature local Bundaberg community leaders as well as DFVP Council Members Vanessa Fowler OAM, Bob Atkinson OA APM, Dave Kramer, David Egan and Matt Vells.

A shark killed one man this week.
Men killed three Australian women - YESTERDAY!
Only one of these scenarios will receive widespread attention - and no, it won't be the fact that three women are dead at the hands of men known to them in one day.
* A 70-year-old woman's body was found in a home at Mole River in NSW when police responded to an act of domestic violence yesterday, A 37-year-old male is in custody.
* A 23-year-old woman was stabbed to death in a home at Kooringal, NSW, yesterday.
* A 90-year-old woman was stabbed to death at Bondi Beach, NSW, yesterday.
* A Northern Territory woman was taken to hospital in critical condition yesterday and a man known to her is in custody.
* Early this week a woman died after an assault at Palmerston, NT. Her partner was charged with assault. An autopsy will determine if he is charged over her murder.
There's always been a huge disparity in how the media, politicians, policy-makers and our community responds to shark attacks compared to femicide.
We've seen hundreds of headlines published about the shark attack in Perth this past week but there's been very few published on the deaths of women this week.
I have documented the violent deaths of 52 women this year. Not once has a 'catch and kill' order been issued within hours of a woman's death at the hands of a man. No I am not suggesting femicide perpetrators be killed, but I am using this as an example of how hard authorities will go when a shark kills a person.
But it shows how authorities see the existence of wild animals as an urgent threat to public safety that require immediate preventative interventions.
Beaches are closed. Nets are put in place. Wild animals are tracked. Warnings are issued.
Political leaders come with flowers and sympathy.
When women are killed, we're asked 'what did she do to deserve it', the perpetrators score a 'good bloke narrative', political leaders have no words of condolence and calls for increased funding, support services and better legal responses fall on deaf ears.
Where there is a policy response, it always re-active and far too minimal.
We need strong investment in systemic prevention targeting perpetrators and sustained cultural and structural responses so we shift the drivers that underpin male violence against women in our country.
