RESPECT was in every step as over 1500 people, the majority of them school students, as well as community members, frontline workers and local leaders, marched together through the streets of Mackay, uniting against domestic and family violence. Powerful chants rang out with a shared message of respect, as the community raised their voices as one, taking a stand against domestic violence in their region. This annual event, led by Rotary Club of Mackay through their "Say NO to Domestic and Family Violence" campaign, continues to have real impact helping to build a community where everyone feels safe, valued and respected.

Local governments have an important role to play in setting the standard for respect in their communities. During Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, Mackay residents were asked to talk about RESPECT, so to motivate the community to have meaningful conversations about what respect looks like, the Mackay Regional Council commissioned the Beaconsfield Road Men's Shed to create large purple letters which were installed on the lawn in front of the Council Administration Building. Residents and visitors were encouraged to take photos and videos with the letters, sharing their views about what respect means to them. A smaller set of letters travelled throughout the region, including Mount Pleasant Centre, to involve as many people as possible in the campaign. Congratulations Mayor Greg Williamson, his DV Taskforce and the Rotary Club of Mackay for leading the way in strengthening respect and taking a stand against domestic and family violence.

May continues to be a busy month and the recent Queensland Government’s Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Breakfast brought together representatives from across the sector to connect and reflect on the work being done. It was also an opportunity to stand together, raise awareness, and reaffirm our shared commitment to ending domestic and family violence in our communities. Vanessa was part of the discussion about how everyone has a role to play in driving change and creating a safer future for all Queenslanders.

Strengthening partnerships in regional Queensland was the focus of a recent trip to Mackay and the Whitsundays.

It began with a visit to Mirani State High School to support YFS as they delivered a series of targeted, youth-lead, peer-to-peer respectful relationships education (R4Respect) to Year 7 and 8 students.

To further support the work being delivered through R4Respect, the Rotary Clubs of Mackay teamed up with Bravehearts to deliver an Empowering Parents Information Evening where parents from across the region were invited to learn about ways their teens may be exposed to harmful online behaviours. This project is a model of how Rotary Clubs across Queensland can collaborate to encourage young people/students to challenge harmful social norms and build healthier communities.

To complete the visit, a roundtable meeting was held with local stakeholders in the Whitsundays region to share best practice and acknowledge the unique characteristics, strengths, needs and challenges of the area. Understanding local drivers of harm, identifying local primary prevention champions in the region and undertaking a mapping of key community resources will inform future work.

Everyone has a role to play in preventing domestic and family violence.

National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day is an important part of May which is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, as hundreds gathered in Brisbane to reflect, remember and honour the lives lost to domestic and family violence. It is an opportunity for the community to pause, to stand in solidarity with families, victim-survivors and all of those impacted by DFV and to continue the conversation about the role everyone can play in preventing domestic and family violence.

Through the glow of candlelight, there were powerful messages and stories of grief, healing and recovery, along with a call for collective action, encouraging everyone to play their part in making Queensland safer for all. This is why the work of our Foundation matters.

Congratulations to Women's Health and Equality Queensland for bringing together over 400 frontline support workers and stakeholders for the Understanding Pathways To Safety Domestic and Family Violence Forum. This was a great opportunity to learn, collaborate and connect with services and programs across the south-east Queensland region.

Vanessa was honoured to deliver the opening address along with keynote speaker Nadia Bromley from Women's Legal Service Queensland. Such a powerful event building on efforts to prevent and respond to domestic and family violence in our communities.
