For the upcoming Heritage Week, the Box Hill Historical Society are conducting two walking tours.

The second will be based around the historic Maida Hill and Golf Links Estates, this guided walk will lead you from the Robert McCubbin Primary School to the Neighbourhood House and the Artists Walk; describing the history of the area as we walk – with the option of coffee together at the end! The tour will commence from the corner of Devon and Birdwood Streets.

DATE: Friday, 18th September 2026

TIME: 10am
Cost: $15 per person

The first will be based around Woodhouse Grove and Station Street, this easy guided walk will lead you from the chapel, to War Service Homes, to the former St. Phillip’s church; describing the history of the area as we walk – with the option of coffee together at the end! We will commence at Tassell’s Park, Woodhouse Grove.

TIME: 10am

NEXT SOCIETY AND OUR ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING...

Our next society meeting will also be our Annual General Meeting will will be followed by a presentation on our latest project – planning for a forthcoming Social History of the Box Hill Town Hall. We will be showing some of the images we have of people and activities that have taken place in the town hall over the past 90+ years, and inviting attendees to share their memories.

Visitors are most welcome.

Do you recognize anything?

This photograph, which has seen better days, was found in a box of unidentified photos recently. Presumably it is the Box Hill Doll Hospital, which first advertised in the Box Hill Reporter in October 1948, as being at 975 Whitehorse Road. The ratebooks show a Dorothy P. Duerdoth as renting a small brick shop for a few years around this time.
Does anyone know anything about the shop and its owner?

Next society meeting...

43 years with the Wilderness Shop.

Special Guests: Mary and Neil Blundy.

In 1980, the Blundys opened their shop in Carrington Road, and in 1996 relocated to Whitehorse Road. They will share stories of their retailing in central Box Hill across the years.
