Marine Rescue Broken Bay

Marine Rescue Broken Bay Marine Rescue Broken Bay is a 100% volunteer organisation, dedicated to saving lives on the water, around Pittwater, Broken Bay and Offshore.

We rely on donations and the generosity of local businesses. The Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol, established in 1937, was Australiaโ€™s oldest and largest volunteer maritime search and rescue organization. The Broken Bay Division, originally a foundation part of the Sydney region command, became a separate entity in 1947 under the leadership of Skipper Ray Weingott. Over the years, the Division oper

ated from various bases, including Church Point, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, and from 1992 , the Royal Motor Yacht Club who kindly provided dedicated facilities and berthing for our rescue vessels. In 2005, the Division moved to its own premises at Bayview Boat Ramp, with support from Pittwater Council. On January 1, 2010, the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol, Australian Volunteer Coast Guard, and Volunteer Rescue Association unified to form Marine Rescue NSW. Over the years the Unit has provided radio coverage and rescue services and contributed to the establishment of further units at Brisbane Water, Hawkesbury, and a central Radio Centre, now located at Belrose. Currently, Marine Rescue Broken Bay operates two high spec rescue boats from a dedicated wharf at Bayview. The base was rebuilt in March 2023, featuring modern crew facilities and a purpose-built training space available for public hire. Approximately 100 volunteers support the local community, collaborating closely with NSW Police (Marine Area Command), Surf Life Saving, SES, NSW Ambulance, and NSW Maritime for maritime and flood response needs.

โ˜€๏ธSpring is in the air! -and time to start honing those skills ready for boating season.
๐Ÿ›ŸWith our colleagues from Marine Rescue Cottage Point our volunteers had a fabulous weekend training exercise, running search patterns, learning about the capabilities of each other's vessels and sharing ideas and experiences.
All "casualties" were well looked after and a good time was had by all.

Carry a registered distress beacon - it could save your life!

Last Thursday, AMSAโ€™s Rescue Coordination Centre Australia received a beacon alert from a vessel off Tweed Heads, NSW. The vessel had overturned with 3 people onboard.
Because a beacon was activated (and registered!), we were able to quickly identify the vessel, its location and owner. We tasked the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter and notified NSW Police, who attended the scene.
All 3 people are today safe and on land, thanks to an activated beacon.
Remember: As the weather warms up and if you're heading out on the water, bush, coast or remote tracks, make sure youโ€™re prepared.

๐Ÿ˜„ Tip of the week!!
If you know who we are, chances are fuel played a partโ€ฆ
Running out of fuel is one of the most common reasons boaters need a helping hand.
We always remind boaters to live by the Rule of 3 ๐Ÿ‘‡
One third of your fuel for the trip out
One third for the trip home
One third kept in reserve, just in case
Itโ€™s a simple habit that can save you time, stress, and an unexpected call for help.

Hopefully you will never need us, but help us to be there if you do!

As many of you know, we are manned 100% by volunteers and our Unit relies on fundraising throughout the year to keep our support to boaters running. Through generous donations we have 2 rescue capable boats but they need maintenance and fuel to remain on the water. We rely heavily on your generous support so we can continue to support our community in need.

So this year we are starting early, and it looks to be a bumper festive season with some amazing donations for our local community supporters.
