From family recipes to local street food, every meal becomes a way to share culture, swap stories and make new memories. Because when you live with a host family, the kitchen is often the first place you feel at home.

Did you know? A school day in Japan can begin by swapping outdoor shoes for indoor shoes (uwabaki) and that’s just the start of a completely different school experience.

On a high school exchange, you could join classmates for lunch, take part in o-soji (the shared school clean-up), and get involved in after-school clubs known as bukatsu, from sport and music to art and culture. It’s a chance to see everyday life in Japan beyond the tourist spots, build confidence and make genuine connections.
