New for , & members | Quarterly WHS Regulatory Update

We’re introducing a new quarterly WHS Regulatory Update to help members stay across regulatory changes, guidance and emerging safety issues relevant to our industries.

The July–September edition covers key developments including falls from height, mobile plant, operator competency, regulator priorities and upcoming workplace exposure changes.

We’ll bring members a new update each quarter, highlighting what’s changing and what it means for equipment owners and hire businesses.

Due to overwhelming interest, yesterday delivered a second SafeWork NSW Demo Day, building on the success of the event held in August.

Once again, the day was generously hosted by Merlo Australia, giving SafeWork NSW inspectors and staff the opportunity to expand their understanding of elevating work platforms and related equipment through hands-on learning and direct engagement with industry experts.

The program covered machine types, equipment selection, operational considerations, and the critical safety features that support safe work at height.

A key highlight was the support of our OEM members, who generously shared both their equipment and expertise. This allowed attendees to gain practical experience across a broad range of access equipment in a real-world environment.

Across the two Demo Days, EWPA has now engaged with approximately 80 SafeWork NSW inspectors and staff, strengthening collaboration between industry and regulators and reinforcing our shared commitment to safer outcomes across the access industry.

Few people leave a legacy that extends across businesses, industry standards and future generations of those in the industry.

Recently, Peter Davis was presented with a 2026 EWPA Board of Directors Award in appreciation of his service and commitment to the Elevating Work Platform Association.

Presented by President John Glover, the award recognises Peter's significant contribution to advancing safety, supporting industry standards and helping shape the future of the EWP sector.

Peter's career demonstrates the value of staying curious, embracing challenges and saying "yes" when opportunities arise.

Safety is at the core of everything we do.

Last week the held a SafeWork NSW Demo Day, generously hosted by Merlo Australia , providing SafeWork NSW inspectors with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with a range of Elevating Work Platforms (EWPs).

Following the success of a similar event earlier this year for WorkSafe Victoria, interest from SafeWork NSW was overwhelming, with 80 inspectors registering to attend. To meet demand, a second Demo day has been scheduled for next month.

Supported by Merlo Australia Haulotte Australia JLG Industries Australia Safety Systems (EQSS), Ahern | Snorkel, Monitor, Almac Pacific and , the day featured live demonstrations and direct interaction with machine experts.

Inspectors explored:
Machine types and selection
Emergency retrieval and secondary guarding systems
Machine operation and safety features
Hands-on familiarisation with machine controls in a supervised environment

The day also highlighted the resources and training EWPA provides to support a safer industry, including our Good Practice Guide, technical guidance documents and toolbox talks.

A huge thank you to all participating organisations and SafeWork NSW for their commitment to improving safety across the EWP industry.

For nearly 25 years, Peter Wenn has served as Technical Director at the - quietly reshaping how elevating work platforms are designed, regulated and used across Australia.

Ask him to describe his role and he’ll say it’s about translating complex engineering standards, regulations and technical concepts into practical guidance—something a new operator or a busy hire-branch manager can actually use.

We caught up with Peter at his retirement in December 2025.
