Need any firewood?

The Atherton Men’s Shed has good burning wood bagged up and ready to go. It burns well on a cold camping night.

Because it’s all wood cut to size, the bags are great value at $12 for a big bag. If you only want the wood and not the bag, it’s $10.

And if you’ve got any of these bags lying around at home, we’d love to take them off your hands — we’re always on the lookout for more.

We are open every weekday morning, pop in and say hi.

Another satisfied customer. The owner and Tom, our resident handyman, worked together to design the insert. Once the design was locked in, Tom got straight to work and built the unit with his usual care and skill.

If anyone wants a small job, we are here to help. Feel free to pop in and speak to the team any morning for the week.

The Men’s Shed is back into action. With the council now finished at Prior Creek Parkland and the exercise area officially recommissioned, we’ve been able to start our weekly exercise program — and it’s brilliant having it so close to the Shed.

With an average age of 75 doing the exercises, the blokes worked through the exercises at their own pace. A few short breathers were taken, and one of the lads adapted things around his walking frame, but everyone joined in and supported each other. Great camaraderie all round.

If your husband is sitting around the house getting old, send him along. He’ll be made most welcome, and we’re always looking for more volunteers to help us tackle community projects.

Another busy month at the Atherton Men’s Shed. The blokes have been flat out with community projects, repairs, and a few special builds that kept the workshop buzzing.

Here’s what we’ve been up to:

✔️ Caught up on our Myna Bird trap orders

✔️ Repaired and repainted a timber bedframe

✔️ Built donation boxes for the Royal Flying Doctor Service

✔️ Constructed a custom storage unit for a van conversion

✔️ Made a portable display stand

✔️ Refurbished a beautiful timber plank for home renovations

✔️ Built a go‑kart for a local charity group

✔️ Created a military service shadow board to honour those who have served

It’s been a rewarding month, and we’re proud to support our community in so many different ways.

The Atherton Men’s Shed has been busy with a great mix of projects this May.
We’re still in full production of myna bird traps and continuing our steady flow of old furniture restorations, but this month has also brought some standout one‑off jobs.

One of the highlights was the turning of an extremely large hardwood bowl, made from what the boys affectionately call “been‑a‑tree timber”. The sheer size of the blank made it a challenge, but the finished bowl is a real showpiece.

Another interesting project involved trimming and shaping a burl — the large, knotted growth found on the side of a tree. Because burl timber twists and swirls in every direction, it produces a unique grain pattern you won’t find anywhere else. Once trimmed, polished, and varnished, the piece came up beautifully. The end result was a beautiful trophy shield.

We also put the Shed’s laser burner to good use, cutting and embossing a range of ANZAC memorabilia in the lead‑up to the commemorations.

If you have a small project or repair needing attention pop in an have a chat, if we can't fix it, we'll know someone that can.

The Atherton Men’s Shed is going strong, but like every community organisation we have real running costs. We need around $130 a day to cover rates, insurance, electricity and everything else that keeps the doors open.

The value the Shed brings to our members and the wider community is well worth it — friendship, purpose, skills, support, and a place where men can contribute in meaningful ways.

We’re always looking for: New members, New projects, and Small repair jobs that are too minor for professional businesses

If you’ve got a retired man sitting around the house needing something to do, send him our way.
If you’ve got a small job that needs fixing, bring it in and we’ll happily take a look.

The Men’s Shed do the work that professional organisations won’t take on because it’s too small. We don’t compete with local businesses — we simply fill the gap. All jobs are charged at reasonable prices to help cover our operating costs.

Drop in any morning between 8.30 and 11.00 and say g’day.

Here are some of our team doing their bit for the Shed — keeping the place running, supporting each other, and building the kind of morale and friendship that makes the Atherton Men’s Shed what it is.

The Atherton Men’s Shed is doing its bit to help control the growing population of feral myna birds. These aggressive birds are invading gardens and putting serious pressure on our native species.

To support local environmental efforts, the Shed is producing myna bird traps, built right here by our members.
Price: $85 each

Production is in full swing. One recent trap caught 10 birds in just 8 hours, followed by 8 the next day and 3 on the third day — a clear sign of how widespread the problem has become.

If you’d like to join our environmentally minded locals and pick up a trap, drop into the Atherton Men’s Shed any morning between 8.30 and 11.00.

A few more items we’ve put together over the past couple of weeks. We’re always on the lookout for retired blokes who’d like a bit of company and something to work on. If you’re sitting at home wondering what to do with your mornings, pop in and say hi.

And if you need sorting trays, a saw stand, or any of those small-but-handy workshop items, we’re here to help. The Shed is all about simple solutions, good company, and keeping the hands busy.

We’re currently finishing another project for a local resident whose bathroom cabinet doors had absorbed water and warped. He came into the Atherton Men's Shed to see if there was anything we could do. Sure, he could have bought a whole new cabinet — but for a much smaller cost we were able to make him a set of quality, waterproof replacement doors.

It turned into a great little project for our team, and a simple, affordable solution for the cabinet owner.
