Thanks to a community-minded Atherton resident, an open Telstra pit that had been left exposed for weeks—creating both a safety hazard and an eyesore—is finally being sorted out. Instead of just walking by, she took the initiative to call the contractor, Ventia, and flagged it with them to have it rectified.

It is great to see people taking the time to care about our beautiful little town.

While many people assume the TRC is responsible for this kind of work, they actually aren't responsible for telecommunications infrastructure. By bypassing the council and going straight to Ventia, this resident is getting the job done faster.

It’s a great reminder that keeping our beautiful town safe and tidy is up to all of us. Notice something unsafe? Report it to the right provider and help look out for Atherton!

Atherton was once named Queensland's tidiest town, but some residents say the main street has become unsightly. Locals have formed a volunteer clean-up crew to restore the Tablelands town to its former glory.

It’s hard not to be impressed by the efforts of one of our local residents, and an active AEG volunteer. Over the past few years, this resident has taken the initiative to improve the verge between the road and her boundary fence. Through the planting of trees, shrubs, and grasses, she has significantly enhanced the streetscape and contributed to a more attractive neighbourhood environment.

Recently, TRC supported her work by supplying tree mulch to assist with her ongoing program.

TRC encourages other residents to take similar initiative in enhancing their streetscapes and has a policy guideline to provide direction for such activities. When undertaking any work outside residential boundaries it is best to speak to the TRC prior to starting. When considering any planting it is important to prioritise native and suitable plant species that align with the local environment. The linked document has a great guide in potential plants, starting on page 110.

Please note that Council retains the right to remove any plantings at its discretion. The TRC guideline is available here - https://www.trc.qld.gov.au/download/schedules-policies/

It’s wonderful to see the new life being breathed into our town center. Some of the local businesses on Main Street really led the way by placing beautiful pot plants in front of their shops even before the recent community clean-up effort. The Tablelands Regional Council today was addressing the grass shoots between the pavers and with the incredible work done by the Atherton Enhancement Group volunteers, the area is truly regaining its vibrance. Now, it’s time to turn our attention to Mable Street!

If you haven't visited our retail area on Main Street for a while, it's time to visit. See if you can see a gradual change coming on. And pop in to the businesses going the extra mile to say thanks, and see what's on offer - I'm sure they would appreciate it.

Great to see such a commitment in our community.

COMMUNITY champion Peter Tuck has been honoured with a plaque for his dedicated efforts to enhance the Atherton Tablelands Rail Trail (ATRT), where he and his group have planted more than 4000 trees in the past five years.
