There was an alleged late night escape from the Alice Springs watchhouse

Police say a 32-year-old man allegedly tried to escape the watchhouse just after 11.20pm on Sunday night.

Officers had entered the cell for rubbish collection and with the door open the man allegedly made a run for it.

He made it to the rear door of the building and attempted to kick it open, however, more officers arrived and restrained the man.
The duress alarm was activated but the 32-year-old did not leave the watchhouse.

The man is back in custody and is expected to be hit with more charges today,

Another aggravated buglary in Alice Springs

The Northern Territory Police Force has arrested and charged three males in relation to an aggravated burglary that occurred in Alice Springs in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Around 2:20am, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received a report of an unlawful entry at a residence on Hibiscus Street in East Side.

It is alleged the offenders entered a shed at the property and stole items, before attempting to gain entry to the main residence. An occupant of the residence discovered them and allegedly attempted to restrain one offender who was subsequently able to flee after being assisted by his co-offenders.

The victim suffered minor injuries and was later assessed at the scene.

Multiple police units responded and established a cordon of the area. With assistance from the police drone, three male offenders aged 16, 18 and 22, were located and arrested on Banksia Street.

The 16-year-old and 22-year-old were both charged with aggravated burglary and engage in violent conduct. The 18-year-old was charged with aggravated burglary, engage in violent conduct and breach bail. All three are due to appear in court today

Repeated warnings that convicted child s*x offenders were living with a vulnerable Northern Territory child did not merit investigation or were marked “no further action” by welfare authorities until it emerged the 13-year-old was in a “relationship” with an older man.
That complaint – of s*xual exploitation, neglect and exposure to drugs and violence – was substantiated by investigators but appeared to trigger no substantive action.
This case and others examined by The Australian reveal the depths of the child protection crisis in the Top End and the scale of reported incidents that do not meet the threshold for investigation

Figures reveal the vast majority of notifications in the NT are never investigated: in 2024-25, 23,668 child protection notifications were made but just 20 per cent (4917) proceeded to investigation, and 29 per cent of those cases were substantiated.
In the eight months to March this year, 860 notifications related to s*xual harm, according to departmental records, leading to 412 investigations. Of those, 45 were substantiated.
In response to questions, NT Child Protection Minister Robyn Cahill said she had been alarmed at the long records of some children known to her department.
