Still a few days left to catch this beautiful exhibition of remnants and artefacts of the Desert Hothouse season, now placed in the galleries at the Araluen Arts Centre ✨

Dance is such an ephemeral form, so it’s a rare moment to be able to see the traces of this epic project live on for just a little longer.

The exhibition is open all weekend, 10am - 4pm.
Artefact #1 will be present in the galleries intermittently.

Another absolutely EPIC three weeks in the studio has wrapped up! White Lies has come to life through the bodies, brains and hearts of the collaborative team, led by fearless choreographer extraordinaire Katina Olsen 🩷 we took the work from studio to stage in preparation for its premiere THIS FRIDAY - and it was so incredibly exciting to see it in all its fullness in the theatre with full lighting, sound and video elements intricately woven into the choreography.

This work is brave, bold and incredibly timely, and the studio has been full of deep, complex conversations around truth-telling, representation, colonisation and power - amongst moments of tenderness, joy and togetherness 💜

Tickets are selling QUICK so make sure you get yours! Link in our bio for White Lies and all the Desert Hothouse shows!

Meet the choreographer: Madeleine Krenek (Madeleine Krenek) - Public Property.

Originally from Aotearoa and now based in Mparntwe. Madeleine is a dancer, choreographer, teacher and facilitator, and also the co-founder and Artistic Director of GUTS. She has worked broadly across dance in myriad platforms across Australia and abroad. As a dancer she has performed with leading companies and independent choreographers, and has had her choreographic work presented in Australia, New Zealand and the USA.

Madeleine says: “In my initial musings for this work I was asking myself the question, “What happens in our own bodies when we watch someone else’s?”. I’ve always been fascinated by the body’s ability to communicate and evoke feelings and emotions. We all experience the world through our bodies, so I believe movement can create a kind of empathy that isn’t just emotional or intellectual, but physical. Public Property began in this place of physical empathy. I wanted to create an opportunity for audiences to experience the work viscerally, where the body understands something before the mind has time to explain it. For me, this is one of the unique possibilities of dance.”

You can catch Public Property on Friday the 31st of July at 6:30pm in the Aviation Museum Carpark, Araluen Arts Centre.

Meet the choreographer: Frankie Snowdon () - territory

Born and raised in Mparntwe/Alice Springs, Frankie is the founder and Co-Director of GUTS Dance Central Australia. Her work as a dance artist spans performance, choreography, teaching, community based projects, program creation and facilitation and sector advocacy. Frankie has worked extensively as a performer, choreographer, collaborator and producer throughout Australia and abroad, for big and small companies (Lucy Guerin Inc., Chunky Move, Opera Australia), but mainly on myriad Independent projects and platforms that champion experimental and diverse artistic expression.

Frankie says: “I first started thinking about the concepts and ideas that have evolved in “territory” over a decade go, as a younger artist in a different country at a different time. It’s astonishing and important to me that over that time, the big ideas and feelings I have about what “territory” grapples with - broadly humanity’s obsession with power and control, and the instruments governments and their actors have created in order to impose this control on societies and individuals - feel louder and more urgent than ever. It’s taken me a long time to find the bravery and right collaborators to make this work, and I am overcome by gratitude to be able to bring it to life, here and now, back in my home and contextualised by all that has shaped me, my understanding of the world and my practice.”

You can catch “territory” on Sunday August 2nd in the Araluen Gallery. Link to tickets in our bio.
