Multistorey gardens are proving that limited space does not have to mean limited food production. By growing crops vertically in layers, these innovative gardens make it possible to produce more food in small spaces while promoting efficient use of resources and encouraging the reuse of materials such as PET bottles.

At the Isiziba Youth Innovation Hub, young people are discovering that you don’t need a lot of land to grow a lot of food! 🌱

Through multistorey gardens, the youth are learning creative ways of making the most of small spaces for agriculture. What would normally accommodate just 14 plants in a conventional garden bed can now accommodate an impressive 70 plants using the same piece of land! 🌿

The hands-on sessions are introducing young people to exciting concepts such as intercropping, vertical farming and the recycling of materials to create productive food-growing spaces. Better still, the multistorey gardens are easily accessible, making watering and maintaining the plants much simpler. 🌱

Small spaces, big possibilities! Through innovation and practical learning, young people are reimagining how food can be grown in urban spaces. ♻️



It’s exciting to see young people putting their knowledge into action.🌱

Here, a youth champion demonstrates to fellow youth champions how to plant a tree, sharing the skills and knowledge they have gained with their peers. There’s something powerful about young people learning from young people and passing on knowledge to inspire action.

Today, the Isiziba Youth Innovation Hub was buzzing with creativity, learning and action! 🌱♻️

As part of their sustainability training and journey towards a circular economy, young people put yesterday’s collected PET bottles to good use. The bottles were painted, filled with sand and creatively repurposed into a multistorey garden, giving waste a second life.

The youth then planted seedlings, demonstrating how even confined spaces can be transformed into productive food gardens. 🌿🥬

The multistorey garden accommodates 45 plants, compared to just 10–14 plants in a conventional bed occupying the same amount of space allowing for roughly four times as many plants in the same footprint! 🌱

Waste into opportunity. Small spaces into food gardens. Learning into action. 💚

Today was an exciting day at the Isiziba Youth Innovation Hub, where the youths took part in a range of activities, including planting seedlings in the multi-storey gardens, planting trees, and watering the existing plants. 🌱

A highlight of the day was the recycling activity, where youth champions were challenged to collect and bring empty PET bottles to be repurposed into another multi-storey garden. The youth champion who collects the highest number of bottles will walk away with a prize.

Beyond demonstrating the value of recycling, the activity is inspiring young people to see waste differently and showing them that small, creative actions can contribute to building a more sustainable future. 💚

Greenhut attended the Matobo District Good seed and Food Festival last week at St. Joseph’s Mission, hosted by Abavuseleli Land Regenerators . The festival brought together local communities, government departments and development partners, including Agritex, Igugu Trust, PELUM, ZUBO Trust, Dabane Trust, Greenworld, Zimsoff and the St. Joseph Seed Bank community.

The festival celebrated indigenous seeds, traditional foods and sustainable food systems through seed and food exhibitions, stakeholder presentations, cultural performances and agricultural product sales. It created a vibrant space for sharing indigenous knowledge, promoting seed conservation and showcasing the importance of locally produced food in building resilient communities.
