Sometimes equine welfare is not just about treating injuries or doing outreach. Part of what we do is assisting with training, confidence building, and rebuilding trust. 🐴

Some of the horses we work with are fearful, difficult to catch, defensive, or carrying the weight of bad past experiences.

Working with a pony that has anxiety around being caught takes patience and consistency. These small steps of progress might not look dramatic from the outside, but they are an important part of creating safer, happier horses and better partnerships between horses and people.

During the recent storm devastation, Malin and Splitz did not give up on their cattle. 🌧️🐴

Xairu Equine Project would like to extend a truly heartfelt thank you to the Suurbraak community for the incredible support in getting our kids to the WP Youth Show.

While individual donors are not named publicly, every contribution played a role in making this possible. Because of this support, these youngsters were able to be part of something far bigger than themselves.

Although we did not qualify for SA Champs, our boys did our dorpie proud.

Dane Louw (Junior Juniors) – 4th
Tylor Wessels (Juniors) – 5th
Rio Beukes (Juniors) – 6th

Youth Show is an in-hand event focused on grooming, care, safety and education, and these three boys have proved that they are ready to take the next step into ridden show work.

Tylor, Rio, Dane, ons is trots op julle. Julle het met hart gewys wat Suurbraak kan doen.

A huge shoutout to Didi for accompanying the group to the show and being the designated adult 🤣

We are deeply grateful to be part of a community that comes together to make opportunities like this possible for our youth.

It’s a simple but essential treatment that prevents discomfort, infection, and serious complications and makes a big difference to their wellbeing.

Well it’s a bitter sweet, symphony that’s liiiiiiiiffffe 🎶🎤

Today we sent Cinderella (Aspoestertjie) home after her recuperation from her tendon injury.

Cinderella was a completely unhandled mare that hadn’t had any human contact when she was brought in (wide-eyed and panicky) from the veld with her injury.
Treating her was a challenge at first, but she very quickly took to domestic life and by the end of her stay had to be constantly removed from inside the house 🤷🏻‍♀️

Unfortunately, due to the injury she had to be kept largely on stall rest and could not socialise with other horses, which was not ideal for a mare that was used to herd life.

Today she was reunited with her yearling c**t, but to be fair, he was a lot more excited than she was 🤣🤣🤣🤷🏻‍♀️

We will certainly miss this special little girlie and will keep an eye on her future progress.

We are ecstatic to announce that 4 Suurbraak riders have qualified to compete at the Western Province Youth Show Champio...

We are ecstatic to announce that 4 Suurbraak riders have qualified to compete at the Western Province Youth Show Championships!
A huge congratulations to Tylor Wessels, Rio Beukes, Elvino Heunis and Dane Louw who will represent Suurbraak on May 1st at Villiersdorp! 🏆🎉

Now we need to get them there.
We’re raising R6,000 to cover transport and competition costs.

Your donated bridles, bits, and tack replace these with something safer and more comfortable.

What might be old, unused or broken to you, becomes proper equipment for a horse that’s been making do with whatever is available.

📢 💙🙏🏻Call for assistance 📢 💙🙏🏻

This is Wonder Boy. Wonder Boy came from a “trail riding business” in the area, where he was severely neglected. His new owners had to walk him over 20kms in a shocking state, to bring him home.

If you can believe it, he has actually gained weight since we assisted his owners in January, but we would like to raise funds for additional feed and veterinary care for this sweet boy.
