INTRODUCING THE XAIRU EQUINE ABILITY INITIATIVE

We’re very proud to launch our new Equine Ability Initiative, created by Lauren Visage in memory of her brother Andrew Findlay Heughan, and the special connection he shared with animals.

Working in conjunction with Annatjie Venter, an experienced horse trainer and riding instructor living with a disability, the initiative will give local Suurbraak children access to riding lessons and the opportunity to learn, grow and build confidence through horses.

Andrew found in animals something people sometimes struggle to give - acceptance without judgement or pretence. Through this initiative, his legacy will help local children discover that same connection. ❤️

‼️TRIGGER WARNING - GRAPHIC IMAGES‼️

This morning Strawberry’s owner called us. She had gone into foal in the road, and he was certain something was wrong.

On arrival we discovered that the foal was rotated upside down, with one foreleg folded backwards, preventing it from passing through the birth canal. This is known as dystocia, meaning a difficult or obstructed birth. The foal was sadly stillborn.

🙏🏻🙏🏻 Our sincere thanks go out to the joint effort of Dr Lize Venter from Hermitage Veterinary Clinic who stayed on call with us to assist with the extremely stressful birth, while Dr Adrian Coetzee from Swellendam Dierehospitaal broke the speed of sound on his way here ✈️

A huge shoutout to Tiffiny Michalski who jumped into midwife mode to reposition and manually extract the foal. 🧑🏻‍⚕️

Today we delivered 20+ bags of feed to local pig farmers in the village, generously donated by Swellendam SPCA in response to the recent storms 🐷🐽

They also donated a few bags for our “toothless wonder” horses identified during the Dental Drive. A huge thank you to Dee Hazell and the team 🙏🏻

A shoutout to Ferdio for organising the deliveries and putting it all together, and a thank you to Tony, Wayne, Maansie and Klein Chillo (🌶️Chilli) for moving over a ton of feed!! 👏🏻💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼👏🏻

Our buddy Black (Bird, Birbie, Biza) arrived with a nasty cut above his fetlock which, unfortunately, couldn’t be stitched.

Black is firmly anti-establishment and does not support modern veterinary intervention.
He considers dewormers to be part of a government surveillance plot, believes farriers are agents of Big Hoof, and starts to mutter about Bill Gates at the mere mention of a tetanus shot. 💊💉⛔️

Despite his objections, he has reluctantly accepted wound treatment and is making good progress. We expect a full recovery, although he remains unconvinced that any of this was necessary.
