Today is World Book Day — and it’s a reminder of something simple, but powerful: books open worlds.

At the Light from Africa Foundation, we see it every day. When a child picks up a book, something shifts. Curiosity sparks. Confidence grows. Imagination takes over.

But for many children in underserved communities, access to books is still limited. That’s why our Libraries and Literacy Programme focuses on creating spaces where reading is part of everyday life — not a luxury.

Because when children have books, they don’t just learn to read.
They begin to see what’s possible.

This World Book Day, we celebrate the joy of reading — and the opportunity it creates for every child to learn, dream and grow.

📣 Our 2025 Annual Report is live.

It’s been an extraordinary year for the Light from Africa Foundation, reaching more young people, strengthening our programmes, and creating spaces where dignity, creativity and opportunity can thrive.

This work is powered by people.

Thank you to our staff, volunteers and facilitators who show up with heart every day. To our donors and partners who believe in what’s possible. And to our board for your steady guidance.

We couldn’t do this without you.

🌍 From Legacy to Leadership – Reflecting on World NGO Day

On World NGO Day (Friday, 27 February), Light from Africa Foundation CEO Godfrey Hendrickse attended a special gathering hosted by Inyathelo | The South African Institute for Advancement.

Captured here with Inyathelo’s Acting Executive Director, Feryal Domingo, in front of the 2010 Inyathelo Philanthropy Award plaque awarded to LFA founders Anthony and Carole Record, this moment is more than symbolic.

It is a reminder that strong institutions are built on vision, values and sustained commitment.

At a time when inequality, youth unemployment and funding pressures continue to shape the nonprofit landscape, partnerships between civil society organisations remain critical. The Records’ original vision, to support vulnerable youth while creating work opportunities through skills development and training, continues to echo in the work we do today.

Legacy is not about looking back. It is about carrying forward what works.

We remain committed to investing in young people, strengthening communities and advancing the role of philanthropy in South Africa.
