A huge thank you for a wonderful media launch on Friday, where we had the privilege of meeting our representative athlete, Anton de Beer! 🇿🇦

A former military man, Anton brings an incredible spirit of strength, determination and teamwork to the challenge. Values that resonate deeply with our mission at The Rhisotope Project.

We’re excited to share not only our mission, but also give Anton and the Bigg Pull team an up-close, on-site look at what we do and the role science and innovation can play in conservation.

Meet the Team: Professor James Larkin 🦏🔬

Meet Professor James Larkin, Director of the Radiation and Health Physics Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand and former Chair of the IAEA’s International Nuclear Security Education Network.

As an internationally recognised nuclear security expert, James brings a wealth of scientific knowledge and experience to The Rhisotope Project, providing invaluable scientific leadership as we work towards protecting the Next 500 rhinos.

We’re incredibly lucky to have his expertise helping turn cutting-edge science into real-world conservation impact. 🌍🦏

Male white rhinos are generally solitary and establish territories that may overlap with the ranges of several females. These territories provide access to essential resources such as food, water and suitable habitat, while also creating opportunities for breeding.

Although rhinos are often described as solitary, they aren’t antisocial. They use scent, movement and physical interactions to communicate and recognise other individuals across their landscape.

Understanding where rhinos move and how they use their habitat is crucial for effective conservation.

🚛🦏 We’re incredibly proud to announce that The Rhisotope Project has been selected as one of the Official Charities of The Bigg Pull 2026!

Over the coming months, an extraordinary team will take on the challenge of pulling a truck all the way from Centurion to Cape Town, proving that when people come together for a greater purpose, incredible things can happen.

We’re honoured to be part of this journey and can’t wait to share more about the event, introduce you to the amazing people behind it, and show you how The Bigg Pull is making a real difference for charities across South Africa.

Tiny feet. Big personalities. 🦏💚

Baby rhinos may be small, but they’re impressive from day one!

✨ Fun rhino calf facts:

🍼 A white rhino calf weighs around 40-65 kg at birth.
🥛 They can drink 20-30 litres of milk every day to fuel their incredible growth.
🌱 Rhino calves usually stay close to their mothers for 2-3 years, learning everything they need to survive in the wild before becoming independent.

Every healthy calf represents hope for the future, but only if they’re given the chance to grow up safely.

Through The Next 500 Campaign, we’re working to protect more rhinos using innovative science that helps keep them safe from poaching.

For World Ranger Day, we honour the rangers who patrol, protect, observe and care for our wild spaces, often quietly, often in challenging conditions, and always with incredible dedication.

At The Rhisotope Project, we believe technology can help support the people on the ground doing this vital work. Together, we can give rhinos a better chance at survival and protect The Next 500.
