What does inclusive healthcare really look like? 💙

For student volunteer Faith Serwaa supporting Special Olympics Ghana's Opening Eyes program at Shalom Special School in Nkoranza, the answer went far beyond clinical skills. 👓

“I realised knowing how to perform a vision test was only a tiny part of full patient care."

It meant slowing down. Listening. Repeating instructions when needed. Changing how you communicate. Giving every participant the time and support needed to access quality eye care.

And that experience left an important lesson for a future career in optometry: inclusive care isn't just something to learn about. It's something to practise.

Through Special Olympics Healthy Athletes, experiences like these can bring health professionals and people with intellectual disabilities together, helping create a healthcare system where every person is seen, heard and supported.❤️

🌟In Burundi, inclusion took center stage this weekend!

Special Olympics Burundi brought together children and young people with and without intellectual disabilities, including refugees from neighboring Congo, for a powerful day of sport, friendship, and social inclusion at the ENES playground in Ntahangwa.

🇧🇮 The event featured an athlete parade, unified sports activities, and cultural performances celebrating Burundi's heritage. Speakers encouraged families to support children with disabilities and ensure they have opportunities to learn, play, and thrive.
