Every year, our regional groups draft advocacy plans which touch on a subject pertaining to the group's needs and the needs of the community it caters for. We also work alongside our sister advocacy group Young Urban Women South Africa to collaborate on youth-related issues that affect us all.

Check out some of their work on their social media pages and don't forget to write to us about how we can build a safe, non-bias society.

Most of our subject matter stems from young men who make up YUM, that's because our group serves to help its own members with their everyday challenges.

We are still and looking forward to the upcoming annual Human Rights Festival at Constitution Hill, inner-city Johannesburg. Will you be there?

Meet Tumisang from our Young Urban Men group in Orange Farm. Having been with the group for years, this young man is a distinguished speaker in a debate club, he participated in academic competitions and has a larger-than-life list of accolades for his commitment to youth and self-development.

Today, he reminds us why YUM exists.

Every year, our regional groups draft advocacy plans which touch on a subject pertaining to the group's needs and the needs of the community it caters for. Last year, some of the YUM members talked about Gender-Based Violence and the stigma of young men and boys reporting abuse. Other groups challenged communities facing a pandemic of Substance Abuse and how the youth of South Africa is at great risk of losing the war on drugs and alcoholism.

It's Human Rights Month and our gentlemen are currently drafting their advocacy plans for 2023. Find out how you can be part of the conversation by simply writing to us or commenting below.

We are a self-advocacy initiative that provides young men with a platform to share challenges, solutions, preventative methods and a safe space to talk about issues facing young men in contemporary South Africa.

It is Human Rights Month and this year's national theme is 'Consolidating and Sustaining Human Rights Culture into the Future' - a theme we have embraced since the conception of Young Urban Men. How are you and your peers sustaining the culture of activism and advocacy into your future? Let's collaborate.

Reach us at [email protected] or send us a message and let us brainstorm.

According to an article by the Centre for African Justice, Peace and Human Rights, men are less likely to report abuse due to stigma. An abused male lacks resources and mainly understanding from the community which has led men to believe that reporting domestic abuse makes them less masculine. During this month of Human Rights, we as the Young Urban Men would like to remind our communities that there is no shame in reporting violence and abuse regardless of your gender. Abuse is abuse, and our group from Alexandra seems to agree. Remember to subscribe to our YouTube channel.

Our self-advocacy weekly meetings have commenced in the five regions we operate in. This week, we began with some of our YUM leaders relaying messages of support and appreciation in light of International Women’s Day. The dynamic group is back and ready to raise its voices as it demands meaningful action through advocacy projects. This year, we will be touching on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR); Gender-Based Violence (GBV); Advocacy training; Leadership and Mentorship, as well as how young men and boys can access psychosocial support in their communities.
