Zwartkops Conservancy

Zwartkops Conservancy The Swartkops River is one of immense beauty and has significant environmental importance. For instance over fishing.

We protect the Swartkops Estuary and surrounding natural areas to build a healthier environment and stronger community. 🌿🌊
Follow us for local events, conservation updates, and ways you can get involved in protecting our shared natural heritage. The Zwartkops Conservancy formed in 1969 is one of the oldest environmental organization's in the country and is dedicated to fight for the ecological sur

vival of the Swartkops River, the estuary and surrounding valley now regarded as the 11th most important estuary in the country. The origin and source of the river lies in the pristine area below the Cockscomb Mountain and the beautiful valleys and surrounding hills are seldom seen due to its inaccessibility. It is only from below the Groendal Dam that we find the problems of pollution and alien infestation occurring. The river is heavily polluted by water which empties into the Swartkops River through storm water canals,(Motherwell Canal, Markman Canal, Chatty River and the upper reaches in Uitenhage) discharging raw sewerage and many tons of litter and waste from these sources. Pollution from industry and individuals contributes to pollution in the river. There is growing resistance amongst local residents and the general public to the over exploitation of natural resources which threatens the fragile ecological balance and the sustainability of the river. Please examine closely what we are doing, what we would like to do and support us in our endeavors.

This morning, 32 people, came together to clean the BWB Beach β€” and in just 1.5 hours we removed a massive 100 bags of litter from our coastline after the recent storm! 🌊πŸ’ͺ

That’s 100 bags that WON’T end up in our ocean.
Even better β€” 13 bags were filled with recyclables that can now be diverted from landfill ♻️

A huge thank you to the incredible volunteers and members of the MotherwellCommunity Environmental Hub for showing up and making a difference for our environment.

Special thanks to Louis and Cathy Beyers for assisting with collecting bags from the beach, and to the BWB Lifesavers who came to the rescue when our bakkie got stuck in the sand! πŸš™πŸ˜‚

And lastly β€” thank you to our dedicated team who continue to show up day after day to protect and care for our estuary. Your commitment does not go unnoticed.

Every bag collected is a step toward a cleaner, healthier future. πŸŒπŸ’š

πŸŒΏβ™»οΈ Zwartkops Conservancy – April 2026 in Action β™»οΈπŸŒΏ

April was another busy and productive month for our dedicated teams and volunteers, who continue working tirelessly to protect and improve the Swartkops River and Estuary environment.

Throughout the month, focus areas included:

βœ… Litter removal across Perseverance, Swartkops, BWB, bin sites and the Swartkops Estuary banks
βœ… Ongoing alien vegetation clearing
βœ… Recycling collection and sorting initiatives
βœ… Progress on our Bin Project – including collection, painting and installation preparation
βœ… Environmental education engagements with Masifundisane and local schools
βœ… Installation of two new bins at the bottom of the stairs at Tippers Creek and at the tennis court

Every bag collected, every invasive plant removed, and every educational interaction helps create a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment for our communities and future generations.

A sincere thank you to all staff, volunteers, partners and community members who continue to support these important conservation efforts. Together, we are making a difference. πŸ’™πŸŒ
