To create a compassionate world where marginalized communities are empowered with hope, dignity, and opportunities to thrive, guided by the principles of Ubuntu.

As we observe Men’s Mental Health Month, we acknowledge the importance of promoting mental wellness among men and boys across our communities. For far too long, many men have been conditioned to suffer in silence, carrying emotional, financial, social, and personal burdens without seeking support.

This month serves as a reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health. Strength should not be measured by the ability to endure pain alone, but also by the courage to speak up, seek help, and support others during difficult times.

We encourage men from all walks of life to prioritize their mental well-being, engage in meaningful conversations, and make use of available support systems. Families, communities, workplaces, and institutions all have a role to play in creating safe spaces where men can express themselves without fear of judgment or stigma.

As we reflect on the challenges facing men today, let us commit ourselves to building a society that values emotional well-being, encourages vulnerability, and promotes hope, healing, and resilience.

Together, let us break the silence, challenge the stigma, and champion men’s mental health every day of the year.

Today, as we commemorate Africa Day, we join millions across the continent and the African diaspora in reflecting on the journey, resilience, and aspirations of Africa and her people. This day remains a powerful reminder of the historic formation of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963, now known as the African Union, which symbolised the unity, liberation, and collective vision of African nations.

Africa Day is not merely a celebration of our heritage, cultures, languages, and traditions; it is a call for reflection and action. It reminds us of the sacrifices made by liberation heroes and heroines who fought tirelessly against colonialism, oppression, inequality, and division. Their vision was of a united, peaceful, self-reliant, and economically empowered Africa that places the dignity of its people at the centre of development.

As the Mpumelelo Grootboom Foundation, we believe that the future of Africa rests heavily in the hands of its young people. The continent possesses immense potential through its youthful population, natural resources, intellectual capacity, and cultural richness. However, this potential can only be realised if Africa invests decisively in education, innovation, entrepreneurship, ethical leadership, and social justice.

Going forward, Africa must prioritise:

• Quality and accessible education for all young people;
• Economic empowerment and job creation, especially for the youth;
• Unity amongst African states and stronger intra-African collaboration;
• Good governance, accountability, and ethical leadership;
• The eradication of poverty, gender-based violence, corruption, and inequality;
• Technological advancement and industrialisation that benefit African communities;
• The preservation of African identity, culture, and values while embracing global progress.

The future of Africa must be one where no child goes to bed hungry, where young people are creators of opportunities rather than victims of unemployment, and where leadership is rooted in service to the people. It must be an Africa that competes globally while remaining grounded in humanity, solidarity, and ubuntu.

As we commemorate this important day, let us move beyond symbolic celebrations and commit ourselves to building the Africa we envision — an Africa that is united, prosperous, peaceful, and driven by its own citizens.

The Mpumelelo Grootboom Foundation remains committed to youth empowerment, community development, and contributing meaningfully towards shaping a better Africa for present and future generations.

Happy Africa Day.

Empowering Tomorrow's Leaders: Back to School 2027 Program Launch

Following the inspiring success of our Sole Steps For Education program at Ncedo Senior Secondary School, we are proud to announce the early launch of our Back to School 2027 initiative. Witnessing firsthand how a simple pair of shoes can impact a student's education has reinforced our commitment to empowering
learners from all walks of life.

Our early launch is strategically designed to expand our reach and assist a greater number of learners across different schools. We recognize that education is the cornerstone of a brighter future, and we are dedicated to providing the necessary support for students to thrive.

Through this program, we aim to alleviate the financial burden on families by offering School Shoes, and mentorship opportunities where necessary. We believe that by investing in the education of our youth, we are investing in the prosperity of our communities.

We invite individuals and organizations to join us in making a difference. Whether through monetary donations, in-kind contributions, or volunteer work, your support can help pave the way for a generation of learners to achieve their full potential.

Together, let's create a future where every child has access to quality education and the opportunity to succeed.

Statement by the Mpumelelo Grootboom Foundation

On the 28th of April 2026, a significant milestone was marked in the academic journey of Mpumelelo Grootboom. On this day, he graduated wearing a basic worker’s overall and safety boots — an outfit that carried meaning far beyond the celebration itself. Beneath the gown was a story of perseverance, humility, and lived experience.

Throughout his time as a student in South Africa, Mpumelelo’s journey extended beyond lecture rooms and textbooks. He actively sought ways to support himself, including selling airtime through the Flash system and selling biltong on campus. These experiences played a formative role in shaping his character — instilling resilience, discipline, and a deep appreciation for the dignity of honest work.

The attire worn on graduation day was a reflection of this journey, while also acknowledging a broader reality faced by many young people — that youth unemployment remains high, and that obtaining a qualification, while commendable, does not necessarily guarantee immediate access to opportunities. It served as a quiet but powerful reminder that the path beyond graduation requires persistence, adaptability, and continued effort.

The Mpumelelo Grootboom Foundation also takes this moment to express its sincere appreciation to individuals who have played a pivotal role in Mpumelelo’s academic journey. Special recognition is extended to Mrs Portia Webb and Mrs Emily Glover for their guidance, support, and meaningful contribution to his development. Their impact has been both significant and lasting.

Furthermore, the Foundation extends its gratitude to Emeris (formerly known as Varsity College) for providing an environment that enabled growth, learning, and opportunity.

This milestone stands not only as a celebration of achievement, but as a reflection of the journey behind it and the road that lies ahead — one grounded in hard work, purpose, and hope.

As the country observed Freedom Month, this moment also invites reflection: what meaning does freedom truly hold without access to opportunities to work and build a future?

Today, the Mpumelelo Grootboom Foundation joins the nation in commemorating Freedom Day under the theme: “Freedom and the Rule of Law: Thirty Years of Democratic Citizenship.”

This day reminds us that freedom is not only a historical victory, but a living responsibility. It calls on each of us—especially the youth—to uphold the values of our Constitution, respect the rule of law, and actively participate in building a just and equal society.

As a foundation committed to youth empowerment and community development, we recognise that true freedom is realised when every young person has access to opportunities, education, and the tools to shape their own future. Our democracy thrives when its citizens are informed, responsible, and united in purpose.

Thirty years into democracy, we honour the sacrifices of those who came before us by continuing the work—empowering minds, uplifting communities, and strengthening the spirit of active citizenship.

Let us protect our freedom by living it with integrity, accountability, and purpose.
