Week three of the energyDRIVE Cape Route 2026 has kicked off, and our first stop in the Northern Cape took Loeriesfontein High School learners out to Loeriesfontein Wind Farm.

The visit gave learners a close look at the turbines that generate electricity just outside their town, and a chance to ask the people who run the site how a wind farm works and what jobs it creates. Seeing that work up close can help them picture where their studies could take them, and that a career in energy could start right here at home.

Thank you to Loeriesfontein Wind Farm and Infinity Power SA for hosting and sponsoring the visit, and to Loeriesfontein High School for joining us.

Looking for the people and companies behind South Africa’s wind energy sector? The inaugural SAWEA Wind Industry Directory 2026 brings them together in one place.

Produced with Creamer Media, the directory profiles organisations across the wind energy value chain, along with the products, services and expertise they offer. It also includes industry insights and thought leadership from people working in the sector.

First shared with delegates at Windaba 2026, it’s now available online. It’s a useful reference for developers, investors, suppliers and anyone curious about how wind projects come together.

Over two days in Vredenburg, the energyDRIVE Cape Route 2026 reached 801 learners at Weston High School, Louwville High School and New Vredenburg High School.

SAWEA Interim CEO Ms Titania Stefanus-Zincke and Initiatives Manager Ms Kim Thomas joined the team on the ground. They spent time with learners and teachers as they explored the truck and asked questions about where their electricity comes from. With West Coast 1 Wind Farm just down the road, learners could see that the energy sector is already part of their community and that it has room for their skills.

Thank you to Lerole Power Operations & Maintenance, part of ENGIE South Africa, for supporting these visits, and to all three schools for the warm welcome.

DEADLINE EXTENDED | SAREGS 2026 now closes on 10 November 2026

The deadline for the 2026 South African Renewable Energy Grid Survey (SAREGS) has been extended to 10 November 2026, giving developers and IPPs more time to submit their project information.

Last year’s survey identified 72 GW of wind and solar PV projects at advanced stages of development. That information helps National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA) plan where new grid capacity is needed, so the more complete this year’s submissions are, the better the grid can be planned for the projects coming through.

If your projects aren’t in yet, we encourage you to use the extra time.

Please note:

→ Projects submitted in previous rounds (2022–2025) must be resubmitted to be considered active in 2026.

→ All submissions are handled by the NTCSA Planning Team. SAWEA and South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) do not have access to project-level data.

We’ve extended the deadline for WIIP 2027 intern applications to 30 October 2026.

If you’ve graduated in engineering, science, technology, business and commerce, or the social sciences and law, there’s still time to apply for a place in the Wind Industry Internship Programme. Host companies are looking for graduates in the fields listed in the graphic.

WIIP places graduates with SAWEA member companies, where they gain practical workplace experience in South Africa’s wind energy sector.

Today, our Interim Chief Executive Officer, Ms Titania Stefanus-Zincke, moderated a CEO Executive Dialogue at Solar & Storage Live Cape Town on protecting the investment case: grid security, tariffs and the bankability of battery energy storage.

Thank you to panellists Ms Nomfundo Mbijekana (SOLA Group), Mr Murendeni Matshinyatsimbi (Energy Intensive Users Group) and Mr Vuyo Ntoi (African Infrastructure Investment Managers), and to Terrapinn and SAPVIA for hosting.

These are questions the whole renewable energy sector shares. Reliable grid access, predictable tariffs and bankable storage help every project get built, and conversations like this one show the value of working on them together.

We’re pleased to welcome Lerole Power Operations & Maintenance, part of ENGIE South Africa, as a Diamond sponsor of the energyDRIVE Cape Route 2026.

Lerole Power operates and maintains three of ENGIE’s plants in the Western and Northern Cape: West Coast 1 Wind Farm (94 MW), Vredendal Solar Park and Aurora-Rietvlei Solar Park. On 21 and 22 October, the energyDRIVE truck visits schools with their support.

Thank you to Lerole Power and ENGIE South Africa for investing in the next generation. Follow along for updates from both visits.

The second leg of the energyDRIVE Cape Route 2026 is on the road. On 19 and 20 October, we reached 322 learners at Bastiaanse Secondary School and Schoonspruit Secondary School.

At Bastiaanse, learners found out that energy is not just for engineers: a wind or solar project also needs scientists, technicians and business skills. At Schoonspruit, they heard how new energy sources, such as wind, feed into the grid and help keep the lights on in their communities.

energyDRIVE is a SAWEA initiative that brings renewable energy learning to schools. The future of South Africa’s energy sector looks bright, and learners like these will help shape it.

Thank you to both schools for the warm welcome. Follow along for the next stop.

Tomorrow, practitioners, communities, developers, researchers, government and industry will gather in Sandton for the INSPIRE 2026 Learning Event.

Themed “INSPIRE’ng Transformational Impact: Learning from the past to REwire the future”, the two-day event looks at what South Africa’s renewable energy sector has learnt about community development under the REIPPPP, and what meaningful, inclusive impact can look like in the years ahead.

Wind projects in the REIPPPP commit to socio-economic and enterprise development and include local community ownership, so these conversations matter for our sector and the communities we work alongside.

The programme includes:

• A sector-wide review of development outcomes, including a REIPPPP scorecard
• Tools for accountability, community participation and benefit-sharing in the • Just Energy Transition
• Governance of community trusts
• What social performance maturity looks like in practice
• Skills for the Future masterclasses
