When Graham Howes’ family experienced the devastating loss of someone they loved, the NSRI’s efforts to find him left a lasting impression.

Now, that connection is helping create something that will carry Graham’s name forward.

Spirit of Graham Howes, a Gemini 5.5-metre rescue RIB being built for Station 16 Strandfontein, is expected to join the NSRI fleet later this year.

For a family whose lives were so closely connected to the ocean, it is a meaningful way to honour Graham’s memory: a rescue craft that will head out onto the water with a purpose, helping bring others safely home.

NSRI Richards Bay volunteer crew assisted two foreign sailing yachts over Sunday and Monday. A British couple needed help getting their yacht across a shallow channel to the Zululand Yacht Club in strong winds, and a New Zealand couple were towed to safe moorings after their yacht’s motor failed in the harbour channel. Both crews and their yachts reached safety without incident.

Twenty-four people. Ten countries. One shared goal: preventing drowning.

In September, lifesaving leaders from around the world came together at NSRI headquarters in Cape Town for the RNLI’s Leaders in Lifesaving course, co-hosted with the NSRI for the first time.

The week brought together organisations facing different challenges, but many of the same questions: how can we strengthen leadership, share knowledge and find better ways to prevent drowning?

Because the work to save lives does not stop at borders.

Eight years ago, *Alick Rennie* became the first of a new generation of Offshore Rescue Craft to join the NSRI fleet.

Today, eight ORCs have been built, with the programme now complete.

The journey represents a significant investment in the future of maritime rescue, giving NSRI crews vessels designed to travel further offshore, operate in challenging conditions, and support increasingly demanding rescue operations.

From the first vessel to the last, the programme has built the capability needed to serve South Africa’s waters for decades to come.

Stadiums aren't the only ones getting flyovers! Station 4 and 44 recently had the privilege of joining a C130 from 28 squadron for a search and rescue exercise out to sea.
And what an awesome experience it was!

After years of planning, fundraising and hard work, there was a moment of silence as Rescue 4 finally entered her new home for the very first time. ⚓💙

For the volunteers at NSRI Station 4, Mykonos, this wasn’t just about a rescue boat; it was about every life that would one day be saved because of it.

And aboard Rescue 4 are the names of loved ones honoured through the Celebrate a Life campaign, making this vessel deeply personal for the families and crew connected to her mission.

Because behind every rescue craft is a story of people coming together to protect lives at sea.

Rescue 4 is finally home, ready to serve the Mykonos coastline for decades to come. At first light, the second-last ORC ever built left Table Bay Harbour on her maiden voyage to Station 4, Mykonos. On board were Station Commander Nic Stevens and NSRI Head of Fleet and Facilities Graeme Harding, delivering more than a vessel, but a promise. “There was a real sense of excitement setting out on a beautiful morning,” Graeme recalls.

For Nic and his crew, the arrival of Rescue 4 represents more than upgraded
capability, it represents trust. “Everything she carries comes from the public,” Nic says. “And with that comes responsibility.”

Designed for longer endurance, greater safety, and advanced offshore capability, the ORC allows Station 4 to operate further from the coast with increased confidence and reduced risk. For Graeme, moments like this are the result of years of collaboration, design, and dedication across the NSRI, and a reminder of what shared purpose can achieve. Now based at Mykonos, Rescue 4 stands as a symbol of collective effort, built through generosity, precision, and belief in a simple mission: to bring people home
safely.
