In February last year, a small group of TLNHW members successfully apprehended the cat burglar who had been terrorising Langebaan for more than 16 years. It is confirmed that this individual has now returned and resumed his criminal activities.
This illustrates the results that effective information sharing can result in, thanks to the intelligence gathered and patterns we developed.
Recently, there was an attempted burglary in Myburgh Park. Unfortunately, this incident was only reported within a private street WhatsApp group and was not immediately communicated through the official TLNHW reporting channels.
This highlights an ongoing concern.
While private and informal WhatsApp groups may serve a social purpose, they are not a substitute for the official communication channels established by the Neighbourhood Watch. When incidents are reported only within groups managed by individual residents or a single administrator, critical information often remains isolated and does not reach neighbouring areas, SAPS, security partners, or TLNHW responders in time to allow for an effective response.
In this particular case, TLNHW members were already patrolling nearby with handheld thermal cameras. Had the incident been reported immediately through the TLNHW Alert Groups, our patrollers would have responded immediately, additional resources could have been mobilised, and residents across the broader area would have been able to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
Although our patrollers did respond as soon as the information reached them, valuable time had already been lost and they were too late to get eyes on the suspect.
To solve this issue, the official TLNHW Alert Groups were specifically created to ensure that crime-related information is distributed rapidly across our entire safety network. Each group has multiple active administrators who can immediately escalate incidents to adjoining areas, security companies, SAPS, Emergency Services, and other relevant role players who are on every group.
Unlike informal groups, incidents reported through TLNHW are formally recorded, mapped, analysed, and shared with SAPS and Crime Intelligence. This process helps identify crime trends, supports investigations, improves resource deployment, and strengthens crime prevention efforts across Langebaan.
For this reason, we strongly encourage all residents to use the official TLNHW reporting channels whenever they witness suspicious activity, criminal behaviour, emergencies, or incidents requiring a response. Reporting through unofficial groups alone may unintentionally delay responses and limit the ability of the broader community safety network to assist.
The TLNHW groups exist primarily to support residents, SAPS, Armed Response companies, Emergency Services, and Neighbourhood Watch members through rapid reporting, communication, and coordinated action. Because SAPS, security partners, and TLNHW responders are already present within these groups, residents generally only need to belong to the official group serving the area in which they reside.
To maintain effectiveness and avoid unnecessary message flooding, separate groups are maintained for each area, with Myburgh Park being the largest. Residents are added to the group that serves their residential area, ensuring that information remains relevant and actionable.
These area groups are strictly reserved for crime reporting, suspicious activity, emergencies, and incidents requiring a response. General community notices, discussions, and non-emergency information should be shared through the separate General Information group.
Community safety depends on timely reporting, coordinated communication, and the use of trusted, official channels. We therefore encourage residents to support and utilise the official TLNHW network rather than relying solely on informal groups that operate independently of the structures responsible for responding to and preventing crime.
