We are pleased to announce the publication of our latest guideline, the 𝗦𝗔𝗛𝗖𝗦 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗛𝗜𝗩.

This guideline provides a comprehensive, evidence-based and pragmatic framework for the management of older people with HIV (OPWH) within the South African healthcare context. It moves beyond viral suppression to advocate for a holistic, person-centred, geriatric-informed approach that prioritises quality of life, functional independence, and the management of multimorbidity. Recommendations are intended for use by healthcare workers across the spectrum of care, from primary health clinics to tertiary institutions, and in both the public and private sectors.

Retention on antiretroviral treatment (ART) is essential for achieving viral suppression and preventing HIV transmission. However, men living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa are disproportionately lost to follow-up (LTFU), posing significant public health challenges. This study explored the perceptions, experiences and barriers to ART adherence among men LTFU on ART treatment at three primary healthcare (PHC) facilities in the Govan Mbeki sub-district, Mpumalanga.

Today, South Africa reaches a significant milestone in its HIV prevention response. President Cyril Ramaphosa and Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi are officially launching the national rollout of lenacapavir (LEN), the twice-yearly injectable HIV PrEP option, today in Mpumalanga, as part of a phased national rollout.

Selected government clinics across six provinces - Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, North West and the Western Cape – are to begin offering LEN as an additional HIV prevention choice.

Find a full list of participating facilities herehttps://sahivsoc.org/Files/LEN-FACILITIES-BY-PROVINCE-2-1.pdf, with thanks to Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism for making this available.

Vulnerable key populations will be prioritised.

We are looking forward to Ms Makhosazane Zondi presentation at this year's Long-Acting HIV Treatment and Prevention Conference. She will present valuable insights from the IMPALA trial, exploring the lived experiences and acceptability of long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy (CAB/RPV) among participants in Uganda and South Africa.

Drawing on 12 months of qualitative interviews, her presentation will highlight how long-acting HIV treatment was experienced by individuals who previously faced challenges with daily oral therapy, while also examining participant expectations, concerns, and the implications for implementing long-acting HIV treatment in routine care across East and Southern Africa.
