Our ocean conference, the 11th edition, is happening on the Swahili Coast right now. We are here on the ground with a clear, uncompromising message: we need ocean justice now.

Far too often, environmental issues are treated as separate crises, but the reality is deeply interconnected. Look no further than the plastic crisis.

Plastic pollution isn't a side issue; it is the clearest, most visible proof of why ocean justice is a necessity. It impacts ecosystems and coastal economies first and worst. We cannot protect our seas without fighting the plastic pollution that persists in our oceans.

Elon Musk’s reported wealth is now equal to around 72% of all tax collected in South Africa since 1997.

Meanwhile, millions need jobs, public services are under pressure, and Africa is already paying the climate bill through floods, heat and rising food prices.

This is inequality.
And it is a climate story too.

Tax extreme wealth. Fund climate action. Create green jobs.

Imenti Forest is where Mt. Kenya's elephants raise their young every dry season.

Right now, it's being cleared for an airstrip, under a court order that says construction must stop.

Swipe to see what's happening, why this specific patch of forest matters, and how to push back.

Yesterday, South Africa marked Youth Day - a bitter irony, given how badly the country's youth are still being failed by an economy that refuses to give up coal.

The government calls it the ‘backbone’ of our economy, but it’s becoming the anchor dragging us down. With youth unemployment hitting record highs, why are we still betting on the past?

We’re tired of the false choice between survival and a sustainable future.

It’s time to and invest in the green jobs that actually secure our future.

With the Our Ocean Conference beginning tomorrow, we seized this moment to send an unmistakable message to every government participating: our oceans are sacred, and they demand bold, immediate protection. As world leaders gather to discuss the future of our seas - including the critical creation of marine protected areas - we just had to lend our voice to the fight.

Marine protected areas are sanctuaries where marine life can breathe, recover, and thrive. They are shields against the relentless pressures of overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change. Unfortunately, only a fraction of our global ocean enjoys meaningful protection. That is simply not good enough.

The governments gathering at this conference hold the power to change that. They have the opportunity - and the responsibility - to make bold commitments, to back those commitments with real resources, and to ensure that marine protected areas are not just established but actively enforced. Our oceans have given so much to humanity. It is time for humanity to give something back.

A new Greenpeace Africa report shows that the global top 0.01% wealth group was linked to about US$992 billion in ownership-based climate debt in 2022 alone.

So when people ask why we keep saying “tax the super-rich,” this is why.

Extreme wealth is not harmless. It is tied to the systems driving climate damage, inequality and rising costs for ordinary people.

No one needs a trillion dollars.

We need clean water. Clean air. Safe homes. Food. Healthcare. A liveable future.

Tax the super-rich. Make the richest polluters pay: https://act.gp/4v9MZpP

The best way to celebrate the ocean is to take action to protect it. ✊

On World Ocean Day, Greenpeace Africa, AGIR, and the communities of Joal came together to make a strong call: the creation of Marine Protected Areas, an essential solution for preserving our oceans and the resources on which coastal communities depend.

This mobilization was also an opportunity to restore mangroves, vital ecosystems that protect coastlines from erosion, provide habitat for exceptional biodiversity, support community livelihoods, and strengthen our resilience in the face of the climate crisis.

This action reminds us of an essential truth: local communities are the first guardians of our ecosystems.

Nothing more needs to be said.

We must take action now!

🚨VICTORY FOR SENEGAL'S OCEANS AND COASTAL COMMUNITIES! 🚨

The proposed allocation of new coastal demersal fishing licences in Senegal has been SUSPENDED! 🎉

Following strong mobilisation by artisanal fishers, civil society organisations, and coastal communities, the Prime Minister has instructed the Minister of Fisheries to halt the licensing process and conduct further investigations into its potential impacts.

This is a major win for the sustainability of Senegal's fisheries, the livelihoods of fishing communities, and the future of our oceans.

Greenpeace Africa and our partners worked alongside artisanal fisheries organisations to raise the alarm through media engagement, community mobilisation, an open letter, and powerful public actions. Together, our voices were heard.

While this is not the end of the fight, it is an important step forward. We will continue to push for transparency, sustainability, and the protection of the marine resources that millions depend on.

Today, we celebrate. Tomorrow, we keep fighting. ✊

Last night’s Bafana Bafana result hurt, but watching the super rich pretend they don’t understand “pay your fair share” hurts more.

The richest 0.01% are linked to massive climate damage, while ordinary people are are facing floods, droughts & inequality. It is time to .
