May is Child Protection Month in South Africa โ a time for all of us to stand together in protecting children from abuse, neglect, exploitation and violence.
This year, the specific focus is on ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ซ๐๐ฉ๐ โ strengthening how communities, families, schools, health services, police, social workers and the justice system identify, report, investigate and respond to these cases.
This is not just a legal issue. It is a child protection crisis.
Children need adults who understand the law, recognise grooming and exploitation, report concerns early, and support victims without judgement. Silence, fear, family pressure and community norms must never be allowed to protect perpetrators or leave children unsupported.
At Hermanus Child and Family Services, we call on parents, caregivers, educators, faith leaders, community members and young people themselves to be alert, informed and active in protecting children.
Protecting children means:
Listening when a child speaks.
Noticing when something feels wrong.
Reporting abuse and exploitation.
Teaching children about boundaries and safety.
Supporting survivors with care, dignity and professional help.
Every child deserves to be safe, protected and believed.
If you are concerned about a child, please do not look away.
