Hermanus Child & Family Services Hermanus Child & Family Services (previously Child Welfare Hermanus) is a designated child protection organisation based in Hermanus.

Established in 1944, we render social and developmental services to children, families and communities. We work within our demarcated service areas of Mount Pleasant, Zwelihle, Sandbaai, Onrus, Vermont and Paradise Park, Hermanus. These services include statutory services; prevention, early intervention and reintegration programmes; early childhood development; and foster care.

May is Child Protection Month in South Africa โ€” a time for all of us to stand together in protecting children from abuse, neglect, exploitation and violence.

This year, the specific focus is on ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ซ๐š๐ฉ๐ž โ€” strengthening how communities, families, schools, health services, police, social workers and the justice system identify, report, investigate and respond to these cases.

This is not just a legal issue. It is a child protection crisis.

Children need adults who understand the law, recognise grooming and exploitation, report concerns early, and support victims without judgement. Silence, fear, family pressure and community norms must never be allowed to protect perpetrators or leave children unsupported.

At Hermanus Child and Family Services, we call on parents, caregivers, educators, faith leaders, community members and young people themselves to be alert, informed and active in protecting children.

Protecting children means:

Listening when a child speaks.
Noticing when something feels wrong.
Reporting abuse and exploitation.
Teaching children about boundaries and safety.
Supporting survivors with care, dignity and professional help.

Every child deserves to be safe, protected and believed.

Our social workers spend their days holding space for children, families, trauma, crisis, and heartbreak.

We have recently renovated our office, and now we want to create a small wellness space where they can sit, breathe, debrief, and regain strength before going back out to do this vital work.

We are looking for donations of items such as a couch, armchairs, a coffee table, side tables, lamps, rugs, cushions, shelves, plants, or other pieces that can help us create a calm and comforting environment.

This is not just about furniture. It is about caring for the carers.

We render statutory child protection services, supervise foster care placements, and provide family preservation interventions in line with the Childrenโ€™s Act.

In addition, HCFS operates multiple Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centres and implements a range of preventative and community-based programmes aimed at strengthening families, promoting child wellbeing, and reducing risk before statutory intervention becomes necessary.
