The Democracy Development Program (DDP) aims to deepen the practice of democracy in South Africa. We build strong and active communities that can hold those in power to account. Vision:

This year, we celebrate 30 years of the South African Constitution, a document widely recognised for its commitment to human rights, particularly those enshrined in Chapter 2: the Bill of Rights.

But how meaningful are these rights if people continue to be denied dignity, adequate housing and access to basic services?

Today, we partner with the Denis Hurley Centre for the “See My Face, Hear My Voice” campaign, designed to bring the issues experienced by homeless people to light.

The campaign provides a platform for contesting political parties to outline how they intend to address the critical challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness and how local government can respond to their needs.

Because every person deserves to be seen, every voice deserves to be heard, and every person’s dignity must be upheld.

“From Constitutional Hill to Durban, the conversation on democracy, constitutional rights and the power of the people continues!”

Today the DDP, in partnership with We The People South Africa, is bringing communities together for an interactive training workshop on Power, the Constitution and Local Government Elections.

As we approach the 2026 Local Government Elections, it is important that citizens understand not only the power of their vote, but also how local government works, the responsibilities of elected councillors and the constitutional rights that empower communities to hold their representatives accountable.

Democracy goes beyond casting a ballot. It requires informed citizens who understand their rights, participate meaningfully in governance and hold elected leaders accountable.

Today, the Democracy Development Program (DDP) is participating in the Intergenerational Women Empowerment Programme, hosted by our valued partners at iNgcweti NPO.

DDP’s very own Mbalenhle Mkhize is participating as a panelist, contributing to important conversations on women’s empowerment, intergenerational collaboration, and the role of women in shaping inclusive and empowered communities.

The programme provides a valuable platform for women across generations to share experiences, exchange knowledge, and inspire one another towards meaningful change.

We are proud of the all gentlemen who stayed the course to complete the 6-month program. We are grateful to Helen Maslin and all her leadership team at Huntswood for their collective efforts in supporting this initiative. Behind every voting station is a team of election officials with specific responsibilities to make sure the voting process is organised, efficient and credible.

The 2026 LGE includes roles like Presiding Officer, Deputy Presiding Officer, Queue Walker, Door Controller, Voters’ Roll Officer/VMD Operator, Inker, Ballot Paper Issuer and Ballot Box/Booth Controller.

Each role forms part of a larger system designed to support voters and protect the integrity of the process.
