On the 3rd Oct, IHOM partnered with Key Ministry Inter-Justice for Peace to host a Social Cohesion Dialogue in Pietermaritzburg
We gathered frontline advocates, refugees, and youth to build mutual understanding. But the turning point came when we watched footage of the current reality in the Congo. There wasn't a dry eye in the room.
Seeing each other’s grief broke down barriers instantly. It showed us that no matter where we come from, our shared humanity connects us all.

Honouring the past, building the future. Young people from Restoring Humanity spent Heritage Day at the District Six Museum exploring history through art, theatre, and "making their mark." Re-remembering District Six, together.

The Institute for Healing of Memories, together with Mfuleni Women for Peace, organised a dialogue on social cohesion to address issues of xenophobia in the community. Youth and adults came together to discuss ways of building peace, strengthening relationships, and promoting peaceful coexistence within the community.

The concept of Ubuntu was explored as a foundation for creating a sense of belonging and inclusion for everyone living in South Africa, in line with the values of the South African Constitution. Participants reflected on the importance of recognising the dignity, humanity, and rights of all people, regardless of their nationality or background.

Community Visit

📍 Langa – exploring themes of memory, resistance, identity, and resilience. A living testament to the strength of community spirit.

📍 Bonteheuwel – bearing witness to the painful legacy of forced removals, the intergenerational consequences that followed, and the ongoing reality of contemporary inequality.

These visits ground our training in lived experience.

Our 10-day Healing of Memories participants stepped out and into history. We visited:

🏛️ District Six Museum– a poignant reminder of forced removals and the resilience of community.

🖼️ The Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation– Truth To Power Exhibition – celebrating a legacy of justice, courage, and forgiveness.

A deeply moving experience that brought our conversations on reconciliation and healing to life.
