FAMILY RE-UNIFICATION

When Mr. Stoffel was admitted to our facility during the Cape Town May storms, he arrived without a contact number or any known family details. Our team initially struggled to locate his loved ones, and a first home visit was unsuccessful.

Not giving up, we turned to social media for assistance. A Facebook post led to a neighbour of Mr. Stoffel’s family reaching out, allowing us to reconnect with his loved ones. A home visit followed, and both the family and our team were pleased to find that they were willing and able to welcome Mr. Stoffel home.

On 31 August 2026, we had the privilege of witnessing a very special moment — Mr. Stoffel was happily reunited with his family🏡❤️

At Tygerberg Hospice, we believe that care is not only about managing symptoms. It is also about family, connection, dignity and quality of life.

Whenever possible, we prioritise family reunification and supporting patients to return to a safe and familiar environment. Sometimes, what a patient needs most is not another unfamiliar setting, but a familiar face, a place they know, and the comfort of being surrounded by the people they love.

We are grateful to everyone who played a part in helping Mr. Stoffel find his way home💙

Join Our Team – Auxiliary Social Worker Vacancy

Tygerberg Hospice is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Auxiliary Social Worker to provide supportive services to patients, older persons, vulnerable adults, and their families under the supervision of a registered Social Worker.

Minimum Requirements:

• Registered with SACSSP as an Auxiliary Social Worker
• Recognised Auxiliary Social Work qualification
• Exposure to palliative care (advantageous)
• Valid driver’s licence & willingness to travel

Key Responsibilities:

• Patient and family support
• Psychosocial screening & follow-up
• Supportive counselling within scope of practice
• Care plan implementation
• Community liaison & referrals
• Record keeping & reporting
• Participation in multidisciplinary team meetings
• Home visits & community outreach

Competencies:

• Strong communication & interpersonal skills
• Compassionate, empathetic approach
• Organised & reliable
• Team player with professional boundaries

💜 Women’s Month Wellness Programme 💜

Tygerberg Hospice was honoured to be invited to be part of the Women’s Month Wellness Programme at Melton Rose Library, Eersteriver.

We shared a health talk on Diabetes, Hypertension and Healthy Lifestyle and offered the following free services:

✅ High Blood Pressure screening
✅ Diabetes screening
✅ TB screening
✅ HIV Testing & Counselling

🌿 Goodwood Wellness Support Group 💚

There is strength in community, connection and knowing that you are not alone.

Our Goodwood Team recently came together with clients for their monthly Wellness Support Group at Friend of God Church — creating a safe and supportive space to connect, share, encourage one another and focus on overall wellbeing.

These monthly gatherings are a beautiful reminder that wellness goes beyond physical health. Sometimes, having a listening ear, a supportive community and a space where you can simply be yourself makes all the difference.

A special thank you to our dedicated Goodwood Team for continuing to walk alongside our clients with compassion, care and commitment.

Safety and preparedness can save lives!

Today, the Tygerberg Hospice KESS Office conducted a successful fire drill, giving our team an opportunity to practise how to respond quickly and safely in the event of an emergency.

Fire drills are more than just a routine exercise — they help ensure that everyone knows what to do, where to go and, most importantly, how to evacuate safely.

A reminder to all staff: In the event of a real fire, evacuate immediately and do not stop to collect personal belongings. Bags and valuables can be replaced; your life cannot.
