The 28th annual UMass Cancer Walk raised more than $500,000 to support cancer research and clinical trials at UMass Chan Medical School, despite the cancellation of the event due to the nor’easter which brought heavy rain and strong winds.

Behind every dollar is a story.

“I continue to fundraise so that researchers at UMass Chan can pursue better cancer treatments and help more patients become cancer-free,” said longtime UMass Cancer Walk supporter Elaine Urban.

Together, you helped raise more than $500,000 (and counting!), ensuring that important work continues and bringing hope to patients and families affected by cancer.

In the weeks ahead, we will find other ways to come together to recognize the sponsors, survivors, walk teams and volunteers who make this event so special. More details will be shared in the future.

After careful consideration and the advice of Worcester public safety officials, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the UMass Cancer Walk scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27, due to the nor’easter and the forecast for heavy rain and strong winds. The safety of our participants, volunteers, sponsors and staff is our top priority.

We were looking forward to gathering as a community to recognize your incredible fundraising achievements, honor cancer survivors during the always-inspiring survivor lap and remember those we have lost to this disease. The UMass Cancer Walk means so much to the Worcester community, and we know how meaningful it is to come together each year.

We are unable to reschedule the UMass Cancer Walk due to the scale and logistics. In lieu of the event, we will find other ways to gather as a community to thank our sponsors, survivors, walk teams and volunteers, and highlight this year’s remarkable fundraising accomplishments. Additional details will be coming.

Most importantly, we are deeply grateful for all you have done to make this year’s walk such as success. Whether you raised funds, sponsored the event, made a donation or joined a team, your collective efforts helped raise more than $500,000 to advance cancer research and clinical trials of lifesaving therapies at UMass Chan Medical School. Because of you, important work is moving forward, bringing hope to patients and families affected by cancer.
