September may be ending. But childhood cancer doesn’t.

For a child facing cancer, life can quickly become filled with hospital visits, treatments, medications, tests, appointments, and uncertainty.

But underneath it all, they are still a kid.

They still want to laugh.
They still want to play.
They still want to celebrate their birthday, make a craft, go on an Easter egg hunt, enjoy summer camp, spend time with their siblings, and simply be a kid.

And just like gold, every child is precious. Their childhood is precious. Their laughter is precious. Their memories are precious.

That’s why Why Me is here.

We support the whole family throughout the childhood cancer journey—providing a home away from home at Sherry’s House, food through our Family Pantry, sibling support through SibSquad, opportunities for teens to connect, family activities and celebrations, summer camp experiences, bereavement support, and so much more.

These services aren’t just about meeting practical needs. They create moments of normalcy, joy, connection, and childhood during a time when cancer can make everything feel anything but normal.

Because a childhood cancer diagnosis affects the entire family. And while we can’t take away the diagnosis, we can help make sure cancer doesn’t take away every moment of being a kid.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month may be coming to an end, but our work continues every day.

Because every child is precious. Every childhood matters. And every moment of joy is worth holding onto. 🎗️

❤️🧱 MATT’S LEGO DRIVE — HELP US BRING SOME SMILES THIS FALL 🧱❤️

With my daughter Olivia recently starting preschool, it has been impossible not to soak up all the excitement—the new classroom, meeting her teachers, making friends and experiencing her first days of school.

More than anything, it made me stop and realize how incredibly grateful I am to have a happy, healthy child. It put life back into perspective for me.

Around the same time, I received another generous LEGO donation from Barbara, who has been the number-one supporter of this drive for years. As I thought about Olivia and looked at that donation, my heart immediately went to the children who are not as fortunate.

There are so many kids in our community and around the world who are not getting the opportunity to go to school alongside their friends. Instead, they are spending their days in hospitals fighting diseases that no child should ever have to face.

I never seem to have the right words to express how much my heart hurts for these children and their families. I cannot begin to imagine what they are going through. I truly hope that one day we find more cures and put an end to so much of this suffering.

Until then, I try to focus on what I might be able to do—bring a smile to a child’s face, brighten a difficult day or give them something fun to help pass the time without another screen. 🙏

LEGO sets can offer children so much more than entertainment. They can:

🧱 Encourage creativity and imagination
🧠 Strengthen problem-solving and concentration
👐 Build fine motor skills and coordination
💪 Provide a sense of accomplishment and control
❤️ Create opportunities to connect with parents, siblings and hospital staff
😊 Offer a positive distraction during treatments and long hospital stays
📵 Give kids an engaging, screen-free activity they can enjoy from a bed or hospital room

Matt’s LEGO Drive operates year-round, but this fall I would love to make a great donation to UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center and Why Me before the holidays—in honor of all the children who may not be able to experience their own first day of school this year.

Three years ago, when Olivia was born, I started a tradition that means the world to me ❤️

Every year on her birthday and before Christmas, we bring her to WHY ME to donate LEGO sets to other kids. From the very beginning, I wanted to teach her how important it is to be kind, to give, and to understand how good it feels to do something for someone else 🙏

WHY ME is truly an incredible foundation. The work they do for children and families going through the unimaginable is nothing short of amazing. The emotional and financial support they provide is something our community is so lucky to have 💛

I feel beyond blessed to have met Rebecca and the entire team there — they are absolute angels. The kindness, compassion, and love they show these families is something you don’t forget ✨

LEGOs might seem simple, but they make a huge impact. They help reduce anxiety, give kids a sense of control, improve motor skills, and most importantly… they bring smiles during some really tough moments 🧱💙
