The DeCoste Memorial Foundation honors Senior Chief Scott DeCoste by supporting students, veterans, and military families through scholarships, financial assistance, and service dog support.

The other day, I shared a thank-you from one of our Virginia scholarship recipients, and today I wanted to share one from a past Woonsocket High School recipient. 💙

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 $𝟯𝟬 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗱𝘆 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲!

After completing her first year at the University of Maine, this young woman reached out to let me know she had finished the year with a 3.97 GPA. She also shared everything she had become involved in—from community service and the Honors College to serving as a student attorney for her school’s mock trial team. And she took the time to tell us how much the scholarship had helped with her first-year tuition.

These are the messages that remind me why I keep doing this.
Scott graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1984, and years later, he returned to walk those same halls in a very different role—as a Navy recruiter, talking with students about their futures and the opportunities ahead of them.

Now, all these years later, we are still helping WHS students take that next step in their lives in Scott’s name. There is something pretty special about that full-circle connection. 💙⚓️

I would be lying if I said fundraising doesn’t stress me out. I put way too much pressure on myself when it comes to getting sponsorships, selling tickets, finding donations… all of it. There are definitely some sleepless nights and plenty of moments when I wonder why I do this to myself. 😂

And then something like this shows up in the mail today. 💙

This note is from our Virginia scholarship winner, thanking me and letting me know where he is going to college. And just like that, I’m reminded exactly why I do it.

This is what it’s all about. Helping others. Making a difference, even if it’s just in one person’s life. And most importantly, keeping Scott’s memory and legacy alive.

So I’ll keep stressing, keep fundraising, and try not to have a complete breakdown in the process.

I ordered a few extras to see if there would be any interest in purchasing Foundation shirts, so we have a VERY limited first batch of only 16 available!

They are super soft, unisex T-shirts with our Foundation logo on the front and the full DeCoste Memorial Foundation logo honoring Senior Chief Scott DeCoste on the back.

$35 each — proceeds benefit the DeCoste Memorial Foundation and help us continue our mission of supporting students, veterans, military and Gold Star families.

Today, we remember the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice aboard Extortion 17 on August 6, 2011.

While we honor each of their lives and sacrifices, we also recognize the incredible example set by the family of Special Operations Chief (SEAL) Aaron Vaughn.

After losing Aaron aboard Extortion 17, the Vaughn family made the remarkable decision to turn unimaginable grief into hope for others. They founded Operation 300, an organization dedicated to serving the children of our nation's fallen military heroes. Through camps, mentorship, and unforgettable experiences, they remind these children that they are never alone and that their parent's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Next week, our daughter, Alexis, will be attending an Operation 300 Camp in Florida. As a child of a service-connected Navy Senior Chief, she has the opportunity to experience firsthand the love, encouragement, and community the Vaughn family has built from Aaron's legacy.

At the DeCoste Memorial Foundation, we are grateful for families like the Vaughns, who continue to lift others even after enduring profound loss. Their commitment to serving military families is an inspiration and a reminder that a legacy of service doesn't end—it lives on through those who choose to carry it forward.

May they never be forgotten. 🇺🇸
