The Hooved Animal Humane Society (HAHS) is a Non-Profit 501(c)(3) organization, founded in 1971 by six concerned and committed citizens. It is HAHS’ mission to promote the humane treatment of hooved animals through education, legislation, investigation and if necessary, legal intervention (impoundment). In addition, we provide physical rehabilitation to animals that have endured severe neglect and abuse and then adopt them out to compassionate forever homes.

Join the Front Lines of Animal Protection – Become a Humane Investigator

Are you passionate about protecting horses and giving a voice to the voiceless? Make a real difference as a Humane Investigator with the Hooved Animal Humane Society. Our investigators respond to reports of animal neglect across Illinois, helping to ensure that every horse receives the care and respect it deserves.

If you—or someone you know—have a strong background with horses and a desire to advocate for their welfare, we want to hear from you.

Requirements to Apply:
Must be an Illinois resident, age 21 or older
Minimum of 4 years hands-on horse experience
A letter of recommendation from a veterinarian and a non-relative confirming your equine background
Ability to pass a background check and the official Investigator Exam, administered by the Illinois Department of Agriculture in late fall
To help you prepare, HAHS offers an annual prep course each fall specifically designed for the Licensed Animal Investigator Exam.
