Historic New Jersey Civil War Flags to Be Unveiled at New Jersey State Museum
Rare Regimental and Artillery Flags Return to Public Display on July 26

TRENTON, N.J. – Five of New Jersey's most significant Civil War battle flags will return to public display during a special unveiling ceremony at the New Jersey State Museum on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.

During the Civil War, New Jersey contributed more than 80,000 soldiers to the Union cause. Today, the New Jersey State Museum preserves one of the nation's finest collections of Civil War flags, with more than 100 regimental and organizational colors entrusted to its care. Five of these remarkable and seldom-displayed flags will be unveiled during this special public program.

Among the historic flags returning to exhibit are the National Colors of the 9th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry and 30th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, the State Colors of the 37th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, the battle flag of Clark's Battery B, New Jersey's most celebrated Civil War artillery unit, and a rare headquarters flag from the famed 2nd New Jersey Brigade, believed to have accompanied the brigade during the Battle of Gettysburg.

Each of these flags represents a unique chapter in New Jersey's Civil War history and reflects the courage, sacrifice, and service of the soldiers who carried them into battle.

The unveiling program is sponsored by the New Jersey State Museum and will feature an educational gallery presentation led by noted Civil War flag historian Dr. David G. Martin, author of the award-winning New Jersey at Gettysburg Guidebook. Dr. Martin is currently completing a comprehensive history of New Jersey's Civil War battle flags for publication and will discuss the history, symbolism, and preservation of these remarkable artifacts.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the museum's Civil War gallery, which includes a rotating exhibition of photographs, artifacts, sculptures, and related memorabilia curated by Nicholas Ciotola, Curator of Cultural History at the New Jersey State Museum.

The event is free and open to the public.

Historian William B. Styple Debuts
New Civil War History Channel

Historian and author William B. Styple has launched an outstanding new YouTube channel dedicated to bringing the voices of the Civil War era directly to modern audiences. Drawing from several of his acclaimed publications, including Generals in Bronze and Writing & Fighting the Civil War, the channel combines meticulous historical research with professional narration and production to create a compelling first-person journey through the Great American Conflict.

One series, Generals in Bronze: Interviewing the Commanders of the Civil War, is based on the remarkable interviews conducted by artist J. E. Kelly with more than fifty Civil War generals. Kelly’s conversations uncovered personal recollections and previously unknown details from commanders including Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, Hancock, Chamberlain, Ho**er, and many others. Styple’s research and presentation preserve these rare oral histories in vivid detail.

Another feature series, Writing & Fighting the Civil War: Soldier Letters from the Battlefront, presents authentic wartime correspondence written by Union and Confederate soldiers. Originally encouraged by the New York Sunday Mercury and various Southern newspapers, these letters documented camp life, marches, combat, hardships, and the daily emotions of soldiers on both sides of the conflict. Together, they form one of the most detailed firsthand records of the war ever assembled.

The channel is professionally produced by Bradford Styple, with audio production by Blackstone Audio Publishing, resulting in beautifully narrated and historically rich presentations. Episode Three of Writing & Fighting the Civil War, covering early May 1861, is now available online.
